TL;DR: The right merlin ai alternative depends on why you're leaving. Want Anthropic's newest models? Go direct to Claude. Want a bigger sidebar? Sider or Monica. Want automation? HARPA AI. Want better prompts? Keep Merlin and add a prompt tool: Prompt Architects supports Merlin directly, so "use both" is often the best answer.
Why are people looking for a Merlin AI alternative?
Merlin itself is healthy. Its Chrome Web Store listing, checked 17 September 2026, shows 4.8 from 8.8K ratings, 900,000 users, version 8.2.3, updated August 18, 2026. That is a large, well-rated, actively maintained extension. People are not leaving because it broke.
They leave for more specific reasons, and each one points to a different alternative:
- Model freshness. Merlin's pricing comparison lists Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Claude Haiku 4.5. Anthropic's own models page, checked the same day, files Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 under legacy models and lists Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 as current. Merlin also lists GPT 5.2 and Gemini 3.0. Bundles often trail the model makers, and if you want the newest release on day one, a bundle is the wrong shape.
- Caps under the word "unlimited". Merlin's page shows monthly message caps per model on Pro (for example, up to 500 Claude Opus 4.6 messages a month) and says all features share a combined fair usage limit. The page also says: "We enforce Fair Use limits that are directly proportional to the price you pay after discount." Our Merlin AI review works through what those limits cost per message; we won't repeat it here.
- Wanting automation. Merlin is a chat, research and writing assistant. If you want page monitors or scheduled tasks, it is not built for that.
- Wanting better prompts, not a different model. Many "Merlin isn't giving me good answers" complaints are prompt problems that no model swap fixes.
What does Merlin cost right now?
Merlin has a Free plan, a Pro plan billed $228 a year, and a Teams plan billed $180 a year per seat. That comes from Merlin's pricing page on 17 September 2026, which blocks automated fetches, so we read it through a reader proxy and confirmed the returned page title was "Pricing | Merlin AI" before using it.
| Plan | Billing shown | Notes from Merlin's page |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited access to Basic and Plus-level models; up to 10 messages a day on most Plus-level models |
| Pro | Billed $228 a year; $19/month on the comparison table | Monthly caps per model, Deep Research up to 5 queries a month, context up to 100K tokens |
| Teams | Billed $180 a year per seat | Everything in Pro plus team management; minimum team size is 2 |
The page offers monthly and yearly billing and marks yearly "Save 35%". The monthly-billing prices sit in parts of the page that did not render as text for us, so we have not listed them. One oddity to check at checkout: the Teams seat is billed at a lower yearly figure than Pro on the same page. That may be a promotion or a display quirk; we could not tell which.
Merlin AI alternatives compared
Every figure below comes from the vendor's own page or Chrome Web Store listing, checked 17 September 2026.
| Feature | Merlin | Claude Pro (direct) | Sider | Monica | HARPA AI |

| Built-in prompt library | Not a feature we checked | Yes, opened with / (per its Chrome listing) | Yes, opened with / (per its Chrome listing) | 100+ ready-made commands |
We left Sider's and Monica's prices out because we did not re-verify them for this page; their listings are the place to check. The store numbers tell you how widely each is used, not which one fits you.
Which alternative fits your reason for leaving?
If you want the newest models: subscribe directly. Claude Pro costs $17 a month with annual billing ($200 up front) or $20 monthly, per claude.com on 17 September 2026, and its plan table marks Opus as included on Pro. Anthropic's current lineup is Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5. Going direct means new releases land in your account without waiting for a bundle to add them. The trade-off is that you get one company's models. If you only ever pick Claude inside Merlin, that trade-off costs you nothing. The same logic applies to ChatGPT and Gemini if you only use one of those; Merlin's own comparison table lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month.
If you want a bigger all-in-one sidebar: Sider or Monica. Both have several times Merlin's Chrome user base (5,000,000 and 3,000,000 users) and 4.9 ratings on tens of thousands of reviews. Sider's listing had been updated two days before we checked. They cover the same ground as Merlin: chat with several models, summarize pages, write and translate. Our Sider review and Monica vs Merlin comparison go feature by feature. MaxAI (700,000 users, 4.7 from 14.5K ratings) is the other large option in this group.
If you want automation: HARPA AI. HARPA adds page monitors, price alerts, scraping and scheduled commands to a chat sidebar. Plans are $12 or $19 a month billed annually, or $240 once for a lifetime single-user seat, and its pricing FAQ says it does not offer refunds. See HARPA AI alternatives for how it compares with the newer browser agents.
If you want an AI that acts on websites: Claude in Chrome. Anthropic's help center says it lets Claude read, click and navigate websites alongside you, on all paid Claude plans. Merlin is not built as an agent that operates the page for you.

Why "use both" is often the right answer
Here is the part most "alternatives" pages skip: a lot of people searching for a Merlin replacement don't need one. Their answers are weak because the prompts are vague, and swapping Merlin for Sider or Monica keeps the same prompts and the same weak answers.
Prompt Architects is built for exactly that gap, and it works with Merlin rather than against it. Our integrations page lists Merlin as a supported platform that works on getmerlin.in, and our prompt generator lists Merlin among the platforms it can tailor a prompt for. In practice that means:
- You write a rough request, and the extension turns it into a structured prompt with role, context, constraints and output format before you send it to Merlin.
- You save the prompts that worked into a private library, and reuse them in Merlin, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini without rewriting them for each.
- You set short, reusable values once, such as a client name or product, as global variables written like
{{client_name}}, and keep longer background in a Context.
Merlin already has a prompt library of its own, and its pricing page marks it as included on Free and Pro. The difference is scope. Merlin's library lives inside Merlin. A separate prompt tool follows you across every chat app you use, and generates and improves prompts as well as storing them.
We are not a Merlin replacement and would not rank ourselves as one. We do not answer the prompt: we have no chat, no image generation and no research mode. If you cancel Merlin, you still need a model somewhere.
What the plans look like, at the time of writing: our Free plan gives you 5 prompt enhancements per day, per our FAQ, but cannot save prompts. Pro is $4.99 a month with 50 saved prompts, and Advanced is $9.99 a month with unlimited storage. On the Chrome Web Store we show 4.8 from 36 ratings and 1,000 users (v1.7.3, updated September 3, 2026), a much smaller base than Merlin's.
How to tell whether it's Merlin or your prompt
Before you cancel, run a five-minute test. It tells you whether a different tool would actually help.
MERLIN OR MY PROMPT? A 5-MINUTE TEST
1. Take a question Merlin answered badly this week. Copy your exact prompt.
2. Rewrite it with four additions:
- Role: "You are a [job title] advising [audience]."
- Context: two sentences on the situation and what you already know.
- Constraints: length, tone, what to avoid.
- Output: the exact format, e.g. "a table with columns X, Y, Z".
3. Send the rewritten prompt to the SAME model in Merlin.
4. Send it to a second model in Merlin as well.
5. Compare:
- Both answers much better? The prompt was the problem. Keep Merlin.
- Only one model improved? Switch models inside Merlin.
- Neither improved? The task may need a different kind of tool
(an agent, automation, or a direct subscription).
This works because Merlin's main strength is putting several models side by side. Use that strength to diagnose the problem before paying for something else.
A reusable prompt template for Merlin and its alternatives
Whatever you choose, a structured prompt travels better between tools than a one-line request. This one works in Merlin, Sider, Monica, Claude and ChatGPT without edits:
Role: You are a [ROLE] helping [AUDIENCE].
Task: [ONE-SENTENCE TASK].
Context:
- [KEY FACT 1]
- [KEY FACT 2]
Constraints:
- Length: [WORD COUNT OR "under 200 words"]
- Tone: [TONE]
- Do not: [THING TO AVOID]
Output format: [BULLETS / TABLE WITH COLUMNS ... / EMAIL WITH SUBJECT LINE]
If anything is unclear, ask me one question before answering.
Save it once, fill it per task, and you can move between assistants without relearning how to ask.
What should you move before you cancel Merlin?
If you do decide to leave, the risk is not the subscription, it's the work that lives inside it. Merlin's pricing page describes several places where your material can accumulate, and each needs its own plan.
Chat history. Conversations you return to for reference are the easiest thing to lose. Open the ones you still need and copy the useful answers into your own notes before your access changes. We did not find a bulk chat-export feature described on Merlin's pricing page, so assume this is manual unless Merlin's help pages say otherwise.
Projects and knowledge bases. Merlin's Projects feature pulls from sources like Google Drive, links and YouTube videos. The originals still live where they came from, but the way you grouped them does not travel. Write down which sources each project used so you can rebuild it in Claude Projects or another tool.
Prompts from the built-in library. Any prompt you customized in Merlin's library should be copied out word for word, with a note on which model it worked best with. A prompt tuned on one model often needs small edits on another.
Custom chatbots. If you built chatbots in Merlin, save their instructions and example questions. The instructions are the valuable part; the bot itself is easy to recreate.
Team seats. On Teams, check who else depends on the workspace before anyone cancels, and move shared material first. The minimum team size is two seats, so a team shrinking to one person needs a different plan anyway.
Do this in one sitting, then run your replacement in parallel for a week. Cancel only when nothing you reach for is missing.
Where Merlin is still the better choice
Staying is a reasonable decision, and for some people it is the best one.
You genuinely use several model families. Merlin's table lists Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and Kimi models in one subscription. Paying Anthropic, OpenAI and Google separately costs far more than one Merlin Pro plan.
You use its extra modes. Merlin's page lists Projects with knowledge bases, an Analyst Mode for spreadsheets, Crafts for diagrams and small apps, and Deep Research. If those are part of your week, a plain chat subscription drops them.
You want a mature, well-rated extension. 900,000 users and 4.8 from 8.8K ratings is a strong track record. Of the tools on this page, only Sider and Monica are larger.
Your team needs a shared bundle. Merlin's Teams plan adds member management and a usage dashboard, with a two-seat minimum.
If one of those describes you, keep Merlin and fix the prompt layer instead. For the wider prompt-tool landscape, our AIPRM alternatives, Snack Prompt alternatives and SpacePrompts alternatives guides cover the options.

Create An AccountThe bottom line
Merlin is a large, well-maintained multi-model assistant, and most reasons to leave it are specific. Go direct to Claude if you want Anthropic's current models the day they ship. Choose Sider or Monica for a bigger sidebar, HARPA for automation, and Claude in Chrome for an agent that acts on pages. If your real problem is answer quality, test your prompt first: keeping Merlin and adding a prompt tool that supports it is often the cheaper, better fix. Prices and model lists here were checked on 17 September 2026 and change often, so confirm them on each vendor's page before you pay.
