Monica AI Review: Worth the Subscription?

Monica AI review: what the subscription really meters, how 'unlimited' is capped, refund terms and the August 2026 service change, from Monica's own help centre.

TL;DR: This Monica AI review looks at what the subscription actually meters. Monica bundles chat with many models, summaries, translation, writing and image and video generation. Paid plans are limited by monthly query and credit quotas that reset on the 1st, "unlimited" plans cap advanced queries at 1,600 a month, and payments are generally non-refundable. Worth it for broad, steady use.

Monica is one of the best-known all-in-one AI extensions. On 17 September 2026 its Chrome Web Store listing showed 3,000,000 users and a 4.9 rating from 32.3K ratings, version 9.0.22, updated 6 August 2026, from developer Butterfly Effect Pte. Ltd. Plenty of people clearly find it useful. The question in this review is narrower: is the subscription worth paying for, given how Monica counts your usage?

Two disclosures. First, we make Prompt Architects, a prompt tool that overlaps with a small part of Monica. Second, we did not create a Monica account or pay for a plan. Everything below comes from Monica's own store listing, homepage and help centre, read on 17 September 2026. Where the plan asks us to count which features get used, we give you a worksheet to count your own, because our usage would not tell you anything about yours.

We have already compared Monica's feature list with Merlin's in Monica vs Merlin, and its free tier with Sider's in Sider vs Monica. This review does not repeat those. It looks at what you get for your money.

Is Monica AI worth it in 2026?

Monica is worth paying for if you use three or more of its tools every week and your use stays within the monthly quota. It is poor value if you mainly want one feature, if you need an easy refund, or if your heaviest weeks would drain the monthly quota.

The product itself is broad. Its store listing groups features into Monica Agent and Browser Operator, multi-model chat, image and video creation, PDF and image chat, webpage and YouTube summaries, writing tools, translation, search and a personal knowledge base called Memo. Its homepage names current models including GPT-5.5, Claude 4.7 Opus, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Nano Banana 2 and Sora 2, and says Monica is available as a Chrome and Edge extension, desktop apps and mobile apps.

The weak points are in how the subscription works, not in the features:

  • Quotas reset on the calendar month, not on your billing date, so a heavy week at the end of a month can leave you waiting for the 1st.
  • The unlimited plans have a monthly cap on advanced model queries.
  • Refunds are the exception, not the rule.
  • Plan names differ between Monica's pricing page and its help centre, and we could not read prices from the pricing page directly.
  • An August 2026 service change deleted some users' recent data in certain regions.

Each point is explained below, with what to check before you pay.

What does a Monica subscription actually meter?

Monica counts three things: basic queries, advanced queries and advanced credits. Which one a request uses depends on the model and the feature, so the same plan can last a light user all month and run out quickly for a heavy image user.

Monica's Advanced Credit Rules page, effective 2 January 2026, lists these allowances:

PlanBasic queriesAdvanced queriesExtra advanced credits
Free40 a day00
Pro5,000 a month200 a month1,500 a month
MaxUnlimitedUnlimited4,500 a month
UltraUnlimitedUnlimited20,000 a month

Source: Monica Advanced Credit Rules, read 17 September 2026.

The same page explains what credits pay for. Advanced credits are used for features such as image generation, custom context limits on advanced models and the more powerful ChatPDF. Image generation is now counted in credits, and the amount depends on the image model. As an example, the page says one image with the SDXL model uses 3 credits. Credits are only available to subscribers, and they reset on the first day of each month.

If you run out, Monica sells extra credits:

Extra creditsPrice
4,000US$10
12,000US$30
40,000US$100

Monica's pricing page code states that purchased credits do not expire but need an active subscription to use, and that they cannot be refunded after purchase.

One inconsistency is worth knowing. The pricing page's own description names three plans: Pro, Pro plus and Unlimited. The help centre names Pro, Max and Ultra. The pricing page loads its prices in the browser, and a reader proxy returned an empty page with a CAPTCHA warning, so we could not confirm current dollar prices. Open monica.im/pricing yourself and match the plan names to the table above before you choose.

Is Monica's "unlimited" plan really unlimited?

No. Max and Ultra are shown as unlimited, but the same help page sets a monthly limit, after which your usage is slowed to 100 queries a day.

Directly below the plan table, the Advanced Credit Rules page says that Max and Ultra include 1,600 advanced model queries and 12,000 basic queries a month. Once those are used, Monica limits you to 100 queries a day to prevent misuse, and asks users who need more for normal work to contact support.

For most people, 1,600 advanced queries is a lot: about 53 a day over a 30-day month. Many subscribers will never reach it. But if you chose Max or Ultra because the word unlimited promised you would never think about limits, that is not quite what the help centre describes. Heavy daily users, and anyone planning to use Monica's agent features intensively, should work out their expected monthly count first.

The other question is what counts as an advanced query. Monica's common questions page says all AI features except code completion use advanced queries, and that chats with certain models, and with Monica's Agent, use advanced credits instead. So the agent, which is one of Monica's most promoted features, draws from the credit pool rather than the query count.

When does your Monica quota reset?

On the 1st of every calendar month at 00:00 UTC, not on the date you paid. This affects how you plan your usage, especially in your first month.

Monica's help centre gives its own example. If you buy a one-month Pro subscription on 15 January, you get 200 advanced queries for 15 to 31 January, then another 200 from 1 February to 15 February. The quota does not reset on 15 February. The next reset is 1 March.

In practice:

  • A mid-month subscription gets two allowances in its first billing period. Buy on the 15th, and you get an allowance for the rest of January plus a fresh one on 1 February, before your renewal on the 15th.
  • Every later billing period spans two calendar months, so plan heavy work around the 1st rather than around your renewal date.
  • The free quota resets daily at 00:00 UTC, which may not match midnight where you live.

Monica also limits the number of devices per account: 3 on Free, 5 on Pro, 5 on Max and 10 on Ultra, per its common questions page. Quotas are shared across all your devices.

What is Monica's refund policy?

Monica says payments for subscriptions, credits and other paid features are generally final once you have access. There are exceptions, but they are narrow.

According to Monica's common questions page, read 17 September 2026:

  • Basic rule. Unless the law requires otherwise, payments are final and non-refundable, and Monica treats service as delivered once you can access paid features or credits.
  • Special requests. Monica may consider partial refunds at its own discretion, calculated on the share of unused credits, excluding discounts, promotions and taxes.
  • EU, UK and Turkey. Residents have a 14-day right to withdraw and request a refund under consumer law.
  • When refunds may be refused. These include accounts restricted for policy violations, previous refunds for similar purchases, purchases made through promotions, coupons or discounts, requests made after the allowed time, and credits or services already used.
  • Processing time. Approved refunds reach the original payment method in 1 to 15 business days.

That last group matters if you buy during a sale, because a discounted purchase may not qualify for a refund at all. If you are outside the EU, UK and Turkey, treat your first payment as final and test on the free plan first. On mobile, cancelling goes through Google Play or Apple settings. On desktop, Monica says you can cancel from its subscription page and keep access until the paid period ends.

What happened to Monica in August 2026?

Monica's help centre describes a service change tied to its parent company becoming independent again, which deleted some users' recent data in certain regions. Monica says it is not shutting down.

Monica's help centre says it is a product of Butterfly Effect, which also makes Manus, and that the company is going back to operating independently. To meet regulatory requirements in specific jurisdictions, it said data created by certain users since 29 December 2025 would be deleted on 23 August 2026. Its timeline, as published:

  1. 11 August 2026. Monica announced the change, notified affected users and opened data backups.
  2. Until 23 August 2026, 7:59 AM SGT. Affected users could back up the data named in their email.
  3. 23 to 25 August 2026. Deletion and maintenance. Monica says customer support in all channels was paused during this window.
  4. 25 August 2026, 8:00 AM SGT. Monica reopened, and data restoration and a credit bonus for eligible users began.

Monica says the impact depended on when an account was created and when subscriptions started. Some accounts kept their account but lost specified recent chats. Some subscriptions were cancelled, with prorated refunds depending on renewal date and payment channel. Accounts created after 29 December 2025 in affected regions had their account and data deleted, unless the user backed them up and restored them. Monica says it cannot recover data that was not backed up in time.

If you use Monica, check whether you received a notification email. If you are thinking of subscribing, this is a reason to export anything important on a regular basis, as you would with any cloud AI tool.

How many of Monica's features will you actually use?

Count your own usage before you pay, and count it by what each feature costs in quota, not by how many features the listing shows. Our Monica vs Merlin comparison already counts Monica's advertised features. This worksheet asks a different question: which quota will your real week use up?

We did not use Monica ourselves for this review, so we cannot give you our own counts. Spend one week on the free plan (40 basic queries a day), note each AI task you do, and fill this in:

MONICA QUOTA AUDIT (one normal week)

Task Times/week Meter it uses
Quick chat on a basic model ____ basic queries
Chat on an advanced model ____ advanced queries (or credits on some models)
Webpage / YouTube summary ____ queries
PDF chat (advanced ChatPDF) ____ advanced credits
Image generation ____ advanced credits (varies by model)
Video generation ____ advanced credits
Agent / Browser Operator tasks ____ advanced credits
Translation ____ queries
Writing tools in Gmail or text boxes ____ queries

Weekly advanced queries x 4.3 = ______ per month (Pro allows 200)
Weekly credit-using tasks x 4.3 = ______ per month (check credits per task in the app)
Distinct task types used 2+ times a week = ______

Pay if: distinct task types >= 3 AND monthly advanced use fits your plan
Skip if: one task type dominates -> a focused tool for that job is likely cheaper

This is where subscription fatigue shows up. A bundle feels valuable because of everything it can do. What you pay for is the quota, and the quota only pays off if you use it on work you would otherwise do another, slower way.

Where does Monica overlap with a prompt tool?

More than most reviews mention. Monica has a built-in Prompt Optimizer and a Save Prompt Templates feature, so it already covers the basics of prompt work.

Monica's help centre describes the Prompt Optimizer as a one-click step, triggered with Tab or an icon, that reorganises a rough request and adds missing context before you send it. Save Prompt Templates turns a prompt into a short form with square-bracket fill-in fields, default values, multiple-choice options and a language selector, and Monica says you can share templates with colleagues. The store listing also mentions a prompt library opened with a slash.

If you already pay for Monica and do most of your AI work inside it, these may be all the prompt tooling you need. That is our honest answer, even though we sell a prompt tool.

A separate tool like Prompt Architects makes more sense when you work directly in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini rather than through a bundle, when you want structured image and video prompts, or when you want prompt tools inside Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor through an MCP server. It is also cheaper if prompts are the only thing you need. Our Free plan gives 5 enhancements a day, and paid plans start at $4.99 a month at the time of writing.

Who should pay for Monica, and who should skip it?

Pay if you are a broad, steady user. Skip it if you have one main need, need refunds, or are a very heavy user of advanced models.

Monica is a good fit for:

  • Knowledge workers who read, write and translate every day and want one sidebar for all of it.
  • People who switch between models and want them in one place across browser, desktop and phone.
  • Occasional image and video creators whose needs fit within the monthly credit allowance.

It is a weaker fit for:

  • Single-purpose users. If you mainly summarise, or mainly translate, a focused tool for that one job usually costs less.
  • People who need a clear refund option, especially outside the EU, UK and Turkey.
  • Very heavy advanced-model users who would go past 1,600 advanced queries a month on Max or Ultra.
  • Anyone who needs a team plan. Monica's help centre says team subscriptions have not been officially launched yet.

Two last checks. First, confirm current prices on Monica's own pricing page, because third-party sites often quote old ones. Second, apply the same approach we used in our FlowGPT review: read the platform's own terms, not a summary of them. If you are thinking about buying prompts rather than tools, see Are Prompt Marketplaces Worth It?. For the wider sidebar category, see our roundup of AI sidebar extensions.
