TL;DR: There's no single Raycast AI alternative, because Raycast does two jobs. For system-wide AI on a Mac, Alfred with its ChatGPT workflow is the closest swap. For instant access to saved prompts, Raycast's free Snippets or Espanso cost nothing. For deep prompt libraries inside ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, a browser tool like Prompt Architects goes further.
What does Raycast AI actually cost in 2026?
Raycast the launcher is free for personal use. Raycast AI isn't. Its pricing page, checked on September 16, 2026, puts AI in paid plans only:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | AI credits per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | None, no AI |
| Pro | $10 | $96 | 500 |
| Plus | $20 | $192 | 3,000 |
| Max | $50 | $480 | 7,500 |
| Teams Pro (per user) | $15 | $144 | 500 per user |
A few details from the same page matter for this decision. You can't buy Pro without AI, though you can turn AI off. Credits are spent at different rates per model. Top-tier models are included only from Plus upward. And Pro includes bring-your-own-key, cloud sync, and custom themes, so some people paying for Pro aren't really paying for AI at all.
Raycast is also no longer Mac-only. Its Windows page listed version 2.4.1.0 for Windows 10 and later on the same date.
What do people mean by "fast prompt access"?
Two different things, and Raycast happens to do both:
- Ask an AI from anywhere. Hit a hotkey in any app, type a question, get an answer, paste it back. That's Raycast's Quick AI, AI Chat, and AI Commands.
- Pull up a prompt you wrote before. Type a short keyword and a long, carefully written prompt appears. That's Raycast's Snippets, which are a core feature on the free plan, or an AI Command you've saved.
If you only need job 2, you may not need Raycast AI, or any AI subscription beyond the chat app you already use. That's the most useful sentence on this page.
How many keystrokes does each option take?
We counted steps from each vendor's documented flow, not from timed trials. "Typing" means the words of your request, which are the same everywhere, so they're left out. Counts assume you've assigned any optional hotkeys.
| Task | Tool | Keystrokes beyond typing | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ask a one-off question | Raycast Quick AI | 3: launcher hotkey, Tab, Return to paste | Any app |
| Fix grammar in a text field | Raycast Quick Fix | 2: double-press right Shift | Any app with Accessibility access |
| Run a saved prompt on selected text | Raycast AI Command | 1: the command's hotkey | Any app |
| Insert a saved prompt | Raycast Snippet (free) | 0: the keyword expands as you type | Any app |
| Insert a saved prompt | Espanso (free) | 0: the trigger expands as you type | Any app |
| Ask ChatGPT a question | Alfred + ChatGPT workflow | 2: Alfred hotkey, Return (plus the chatgpt keyword) | Alfred window |
| Improve a prompt in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini | Prompt Architects | Hotkey or click to open the sidebar, then click to enhance and insert | Supported AI sites in Chrome |
The honest reading: Raycast is the fastest thing here for asking an AI from anywhere, and its AI Commands are hard to beat for "run this exact prompt on what I've selected." Text expanders tie it for inserting saved text, at zero cost. Prompt Architects takes more steps and only works in the browser. It earns its place elsewhere, which we'll get to.
The best Raycast AI alternatives
1. Raycast's own free Snippets: best if you just need your prompts fast
Best for: people paying for Raycast Pro mainly to reach saved prompts.
Before switching tools, check whether you need Raycast AI at all. The Snippets manual says snippets store frequently used text, expand from a keyword in any application, support tags, and hold up to 65K characters. Snippets also support dynamic placeholders such as {clipboard} and {cursor}, per the placeholders manual, so a snippet can wrap whatever you just copied inside a full prompt. (The {selection} placeholder is listed for AI Commands and Quicklinks, not Snippets.) Then you paste it into ChatGPT or Claude, which you're probably paying for already.
Weaknesses: no AI runs inside Raycast. You still switch to your chat app to send the prompt.
2. Alfred with the ChatGPT workflow: best one-time-purchase launcher
Best for: Mac users who dislike subscriptions and are comfortable with an API key.
Alfred is the long-standing macOS launcher. Its shop page listed a single-user Alfred 5 Powerpack license at £34, and a Mega Supporter license with free lifetime upgrades at £59, with a free upgrade to Alfred 6 for new buyers. The Powerpack unlocks workflows and snippets with auto-expansion.
The official ChatGPT workflow from the Alfred team lets you query ChatGPT through the chatgpt keyword, a Universal Action, or fallback search, and keeps a chat history. It requires your own OpenAI API key, so you pay OpenAI per use instead of a flat AI plan.
Weaknesses: macOS only. No built-in model choice beyond what the workflow supports, and no Raycast-style screen awareness or MCP setup on the pages we read.
3. Espanso: best free, cross-platform prompt expander
Best for: people on Windows or Linux, or anyone who wants plain-text prompt files they control.
Espanso is an open-source text expander for macOS, Windows, and Linux. You define matches in YAML files; its docs show multi-line replacements and a clipboard extension that inserts whatever you've copied. That makes it a free way to keep a prompt library in files you can put in Git.
# prompts.yml, saved in your Espanso match folder
matches:
- trigger: ":sumprompt"
replace: |
You are a senior analyst. Summarize the text below for a busy
executive. Give 3 bullet points of findings, 1 recommended
action, and 1 open question. Plain language, under 120 words.
TEXT:
{{clip}}
vars:
- name: clip
type: clipboard
Copy the source text, type :sumprompt in your AI chat, and the full prompt appears with your text inside it.
Weaknesses: no AI at all, no sync unless you set it up, and editing YAML isn't for everyone.
4. Browser AI sidebars: best if you live in Chrome
Best for: people whose "anywhere" is really "any web page."
Several browser extensions copy the launcher idea inside Chrome. Merlin's Chrome Web Store listing describes summoning AI with Ctrl+M or Cmd+M from any tab, and Monica's listing uses Cmd/Ctrl+M too. Both describe saved prompts you pull up with a slash. We compare these in depth in our sibling guide to AI sidebar extensions.
Weaknesses: they stop at the browser's edge. They won't help in your code editor, Mail, or Slack's desktop app.
5. Prompt Architects: best for prompt depth, not raw speed
Best for: people whose prompts matter enough to keep, improve, and share.
This is our tool. It's a Chrome extension that opens as a sidebar inside ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, with hotkey access, and inserts prompts straight into the chat box. It showed 4.8 stars from 36 ratings on the Chrome Web Store on September 16, 2026, which is a small base.
What it adds that a launcher or expander doesn't:
- Enhancement. It turns a rough request into a structured prompt with a role, task, format, and constraints, and shows the before and after.
- Global variables. Write
{{company_name}}or{{target_audience}}once; every prompt that uses it picks up the current value, in the extension, the web app, and our MCP server. - A context library for brand guidelines, specs, and audience notes you attach instead of pasting.
- Team libraries. On the Team plan, members share prompts, variables, and context, with Owner, Admin, and Member roles.
Pricing on our pricing page, at the time of writing: Free with 5 enhancements a day, Pro at $4.99 a month for 200 and 50 saved prompts, Advanced at $9.99 a month for unlimited, Team at $10 a month plus $3.50 per member.
Weaknesses: browser only, more steps than Raycast, and no system-wide hotkey outside Chrome. If your work happens in native apps, that's a real gap.
Can you combine Raycast and a prompt library?
Yes, and for many people that's the right answer rather than a replacement. Use Raycast for speed outside the browser and a library for the prompts worth maintaining.
Raycast's manual describes three ways they can meet:
- Copy a finished prompt into an AI Command. The AI Commands manual says a command's prompt can include dynamic placeholders, typed with a brace, and AI Extensions, typed with @. Teams can share commands with their organization.
- Keep the long version in your library and a short trigger in Raycast. The library holds the tested, variable-filled prompt; the Raycast snippet holds the version you fire most often.
- Connect an MCP server. The MCP manual says Raycast AI can connect HTTP MCP servers with custom headers, and that connected tools become available in AI Chat, Quick AI, and AI Commands. Our MCP server takes a bearer token. We haven't tested this pairing and Raycast doesn't list us, so treat it as an experiment:
Raycast > Install MCP Server
Name: Prompt Architects
Transport: HTTP
URL: https://mcp.prompt-architects.com/mcp
Header: Authorization = Bearer pa_live_<your-token>
Custom instructions (optional):
Use the improve tool when I ask to "tighten" or "structure" a
prompt. Return only the improved prompt, no commentary.
Here's a starter AI Command that works on selected text, using Raycast's documented selection placeholder:
Rewrite the text below as a clear prompt for an AI model.
Include: a role, the task in one sentence, required output
format, 2-3 constraints, and anything the model should avoid.
Do not answer the prompt. Return only the rewritten prompt.

What should you check before cancelling Raycast Pro?
Pro bundles more than AI, so cancelling can remove things you use without thinking of them as "AI features." Run through this list first. Every item comes from Raycast's own pricing table on September 16, 2026.
- Clipboard History length. Free keeps three months; Pro keeps it unlimited. If you search old clipboard entries, you'll notice.
- Cloud Sync. Pro only. Without it, snippets and settings stay on the machine where you made them, which matters if you use two Macs, or a Mac and a Windows PC.
- Raycast Notes. Free allows 5 notes; Pro is unlimited.
- Custom window management commands, themes, the translator, and dictation. All Pro.
- Bring your own key. Also Pro. If you were using Raycast AI with your own OpenAI or Anthropic key to avoid credits, that route closes too.
- Shared team items. On the free Teams plan, the FAQ says you're limited to 30 shared snippets, 30 shared quicklinks, and 5 commands across your extensions.
Then look at your own usage. Raycast's settings show your AI credit balance under Account. If you rarely spend credits and mostly lean on synced snippets and clipboard history, the honest conclusion may be that you're paying for sync, not AI. In that case, the cheapest "alternative" is simply staying on Pro, or moving snippets to Espanso and keeping sync in files you control.
A useful test: for one week, note every time you open Quick AI or an AI Command, and every time you open a saved prompt. If the second number is much bigger, a prompt library or expander is the tool you actually need.
Which Raycast AI alternative should you pick?
- You mostly reuse saved prompts: stay on free Raycast and use Snippets, or use Espanso. Cancel Pro if AI was the only reason you had it.
- You want system-wide AI, pay once, Mac only: Alfred with the ChatGPT workflow and your own API key.
- You're on Windows: try Raycast for Windows before anything else; Espanso covers prompt expansion either way.
- You work almost entirely in the browser: a sidebar extension. See our sidebar comparison.
- You want keyboard-first prompt insertion inside ChatGPT: see our sibling guide to FlashPrompt alternatives.
- Your prompts need variables, context, and a team: a prompt library. Our AIPRM alternatives, free AIPRM alternatives, and Promptly alternatives guides compare the options.
- You want Raycast's speed and it's worth $10 a month to you: keep Raycast. Speed you use every hour is cheap.
How do you move your Raycast AI Commands elsewhere?
Raycast's manual has an Import & Export section for settings, but the simplest portable format for prompts is plain text. For each AI Command you rely on:
- Open it and copy the prompt text.
- Replace Raycast-specific placeholders like
{selection}or{clipboard}with the target tool's syntax:{{clip}}with a clipboard variable in Espanso, or a named variable in a prompt library. - Note the model you had selected and its creativity setting, since the same prompt can behave differently on another model.
- Test your five most-used commands in the new tool before you cancel.
Stop rewriting prompts. Start shipping.
Works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Midjourney, Ideogram, Veo3 & Kling. 4.8★ on the Chrome Web Store.
Create An AccountThe short version
Raycast is fast, and if speed from any app is what you value, nothing on this list beats it at $10 a month. If you're paying for Raycast AI only to reach saved prompts, free Snippets or Espanso do that job. And if your prompts are worth improving, filling with the right details, and sharing with a team, that's a library's job, and it can sit next to Raycast rather than replace it.
