Search "AI tools student discount" and you will find lists that read like they were assembled from other lists, several citing a Canva student page that no longer loads and an Adobe education page that, checked directly today, did not load in three attempts either. Nobody re-verifies before publishing, because re-verifying six vendor pages takes longer than writing the post.

So this list is short on purpose. Every entry below is something I fetched from the vendor's own page today, September 3, 2026, with the exact terms quoted where the vendor's own wording is worth keeping. Where I could not get a page to load, or the page that loaded turned out to be a generic homepage rather than the specific offer, that tool is not on the list. A missing entry here is not proof the offer does not exist; it is proof I could not verify it today.

Which AI tools currently offer a real student discount?

Six, checked today. Each entry names what the vendor itself publishes, not a number repeated from somewhere else.

ChatGPT Plus: four free months, verified through SheerID

OpenAI's own Help Center describes it directly: "The 2026 Back to School offer provides eligible students with four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, including access to ChatGPT Work and other Plus features." Eligibility covers "current full-time and part-time college and graduate students enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions", verified through SheerID rather than a school email address, and OpenAI states plainly, "The email address you use with SheerID may be different from the email address on your ChatGPT account."

There is a hard deadline: "Claim the offer by October 31, 2026." A valid payment method is required to activate it even though you are not charged for the four months, and "the subscription renews at $20 per month unless you cancel" once the promotional period ends. Subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play are explicitly excluded while they remain store-billed.

Google AI Pro or Plus: a full year, free

Google's own announcement — headlined "Start the semester with one year of Gemini, on us" — is the most generous offer on this list by duration. For eligible college students in the U.S., Google is offering one year of Google AI Pro for free, a plan otherwise valued at $19.99 a month, unlocking higher Gemini usage limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of storage. For eligible students outside the U.S., in more than 140 markets, the offer is one year of Google AI Plus, free of charge, with higher usage limits and 400 GB of storage. A discounted bundle of Google AI Pro plus YouTube Premium is also mentioned for students who want both.

Verification runs through SheerID, a valid payment method is required at sign-up, and the offer is redeemable through December 31, 2026, after which the standard monthly price applies automatically unless you cancel.

GitHub Copilot and GitHub Pro: bundled into the free Student Developer Pack

The GitHub Student Developer Pack itself costs nothing to join, and two of its offers matter most for anyone using AI day to day. GitHub's own pack page states, "Free GitHub Pro while you are a student", and separately: "GitHub Copilot Student is available to verified students. The plan includes unlimited code completions and an allowance of GitHub AI Credits, plus limited chat and agent usage with models available through auto model selection only." The same page also names a Microsoft 365 offer bundled into the pack, describing free or discounted access to Microsoft's productivity apps with Copilot built in, though I could not load Microsoft's own education pricing page today to verify that half independently, so treat the Microsoft 365 detail as GitHub's characterization of a partner offer rather than something I verified at the source.

The pack requires an application reviewed against school enrollment, not a one-click SheerID flow, and stays active while you remain a verified student.

Perplexity's own help center lists its plans plainly, including "Education Pro ($10/mo with verification from SheerID)" as a distinct tier from Standard, Pro, and Max. It bundles everything in the regular Pro plan, at a discount, for verified students and educators, plus education-specific tips layered on top.

Unlike the OpenAI and Google offers above, this is not a free trial that reverts to full price. It reads as an ongoing discounted tier for as long as your student status verifies, which is a different shape of deal worth knowing before you compare it to a time-boxed freebie.

Notion Education Plus: free, tied to your school email

Notion's own FAQ on its student page is specific about both the offer and its limits: the Education Plus plan gives an individual student a free Plus plan for a one-member workspace, available only when signed in with an education institution email address recognized in the World Higher Education Database. Notion explicitly states it does not accept a student ID or other documents as a substitute, and that K-12 students and educators are not eligible for this particular plan, though they can use Notion's ordinary free plan instead.

Notion AI itself, worth flagging, is a separate paid add-on rather than something bundled free into the education plan, so this offer is really about the free workspace, not free AI credits.

Otter.ai: 50% off right now, 20% standing after that

Otter's own blog is unusually specific about its own expiration date: "The offer is available now through eligible .edu email addresses through the end of September 2026." That is the 50%-off annual Pro promotion. The same post states that it "builds on Otter.ai's previous student discount, which provided 20% off Pro plans (monthly and annual) automatically applied to .edu email addresses." So the 50% figure is temporary and the 20% figure is the one to expect afterward, both gated on a school email address rather than SheerID.

If you are reading this after September 2026, expect the 20% figure, not the 50% one, and check Otter's own pricing page for the current number either way.

How does SheerID actually check that you're a student?

By checking enrollment against records a school or data partner already holds, or by asking for documentation when it cannot. OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity all route their offers through SheerID rather than a bare school-email check, and OpenAI's own help page states plainly that the email used for SheerID verification does not need to match the email on the actual ChatGPT account — the verification step and the account being upgraded are treated as separate things.

That is a genuinely different mechanism from what Notion and Otter.ai use, which is a school email address checked directly against a recognized institution list, with no separate identity-verification step described. Neither approach is inherently better; they just fail differently. A SheerID check can ask a legitimately enrolled student for a document if their school is not in its trusted-records list, while an email-only check locks out anyone whose institution issues addresses that do not end in something the vendor recognizes. If one method rejects you, the other vendor's method might not.

None of the vendor pages here published anything about what SheerID itself does with the documentation it collects beyond the claim flow, so that question goes to SheerID's own privacy documentation rather than to any of the AI companies using it.

Both require a valid form of payment up front specifically so that this conversion can happen without further action.

The practical implication is that "free" here means free-if-you-remember, not free-with-no-further-action. A calendar reminder set for a week before each deadline is worth more than reading the terms twice.

How do you avoid losing money on a student AI discount?

Four things, none of them clever, all of them ignored under deadline pressure.

Read the actual deadline before you sign up, not the marketing headline. "A year free" and "four months free" both convert automatically at the end, and the conversion date is stated on the same page as the offer, not hidden.

Check whether a payment method is required up front. Every offer on this list requires one, even the fully free ones, which means the charge happens by default unless you cancel — there is no separate opt-in step at renewal time.

Set your own reminder, don't rely on the vendor's. Some send a renewal notice; none of the pages I read promised one, and a notice landing in a spam folder is not a defense against a charge you agreed to when you signed up.

Don't prepay an annual plan across a graduation date if a monthly option exists at a similar effective rate, since most of these programs stop applying the moment your enrollment status does, and a partially-used annual discount is not something any of these vendors describe refunding.
