Search "grading ai prompts" and a lot of what comes back quietly implies the model can do the grading. It can't, and treating a rubric-anchored comment generator as a grading tool is exactly the kind of scope creep that turns a useful shortcut into a real problem: a wrong grade with a confident-sounding justification attached is harder to catch than a wrong grade on its own.

This page draws a hard line before any of the 20 prompts below, and every prompt is written to sit on the correct side of it.

That line matters most for the teacher this page is actually written for: someone with a stack of thirty or more pieces of work, a rubric they already trust, and not enough hours before comments are due. The time pressure is real, and it is exactly the condition under which a shortcut that quietly does the judging for you looks tempting. The prompts below are built to remove the part of the work that is genuinely just typing, not the part that is genuinely judgement.

What can AI actually do here, and what must a teacher decide alone?

Draft and check language, never decide the mark. A grade reflects your knowledge of the assignment, the standard, and the specific student in front of you, none of which a general-purpose model has. What a model can do well is turn a decision you have already made into clearer, fuller written language, faster than typing every comment from scratch.

Why doesn't this page recommend an AI-detection tool?

Because the detectors that exist have a documented, specific failure mode, and it falls hardest on exactly the students who can least afford a false accusation. A 2023 study, "GPT detectors are biased against non-native English writers" (Liang et al., arXiv 2304.02819), evaluated several widely-used GPT detectors against writing samples from native and non-native English speakers. The finding was direct: the detectors "consistently misclassify non-native English writing samples as AI-generated, whereas native writing samples are accurately identified." The authors go further, cautioning against their use "in evaluative or educational settings."

OpenAI reached a similar conclusion about its own product. The company's AI Classifier, launched to distinguish AI-written from human-written text, was quietly pulled a few months later; OpenAI's own page for it states plainly that "as of July 20, 2023, the AI classifier is no longer available due to its low rate of accuracy." When the company that built the detector retires it for accuracy reasons, that is a stronger signal than any third-party review could be.

A false accusation against a real student, particularly one already navigating a second language, is a worse outcome than an undetected AI-written paragraph. None of the 20 prompts below touch detection, and this page does not recommend a detector by name.

If a suspected case of AI-written student work comes up, the more defensible path is the one departments already use for any suspected academic-integrity issue: a direct conversation with the student about their process, grounded in specifics from the actual piece, rather than a tool's probability score standing in for that conversation. A number from a detector is not evidence; a student unable to explain their own reasoning, in their own words, is a much stronger signal, and one that does not carry the same documented bias.

Is it safe to paste student writing into an AI tool?

Not automatically, and not without checking first. Student writing is personal data, and pasting an identifiable submission into a third-party AI tool can run into your institution's own data-protection policy in ways that vary by school, district, and country. This page does not know your institution's specific rule, and it is not going to guess one on your behalf.

Where you can, work from an anonymized excerpt, a described issue, or a rubric level rather than a full identified paper. Check your own school or district's policy before you paste anything more identifying than that, and treat "I didn't think about it" as the actual risk here, not a technicality.

This is not a one-time check either. A policy that permits a particular AI tool this term can change next term, and a tool that anonymizes on paper can still store or process input in ways that matter for a school's specific compliance obligations. If you are ever unsure, default to the more cautious reading and ask your administration directly rather than assuming last year's answer still holds.

How do you turn a rubric mark into full written feedback?

Start here, because this is the highest-volume job on this list: you already know the level, and you need the words.

1. Rubric level to full comment

I have already assessed this piece of student work as [RUBRIC LEVEL, e.g.
"approaching expectations"] against this criterion: "[CRITERION TEXT]".

My notes on why: "[YOUR SHORT NOTES]"

Turn my notes into a full written comment, 3 to 4 sentences, that a student
could act on. Do not change the level I gave you or imply a different one.
Do not invent a reason I have not given you.

2. Comment bank entry by rubric row

Build three ready-to-adapt comment variants for the rubric row "[CRITERION
TEXT]" at the level "[LEVEL]", covering slightly different specific issues
a student might have at that level: "[LIST 2-3 COMMON ISSUES YOU SEE AT
THIS LEVEL]"

Each comment 2-3 sentences, specific enough to point at what's actually
missing or strong. Do not state or imply a numeric score.

3. Strength-plus-next-step comment

Write feedback for a piece marked "[LEVEL/MARK]" that opens with one genuine
strength I noticed: "[STRENGTH]" and closes with one concrete next step tied
to this rubric criterion: "[CRITERION]".

Under 80 words. The next step should be something the student can actually
do next time, not a vague instruction like "try harder" or "be more
detailed."

How do you keep feedback specific instead of vague?

By checking a draft against the rubric language it's supposed to be anchored to, not by hoping specificity happens naturally under a stack of forty papers.

4. Vagueness check against the rubric

Check this feedback comment against the rubric criterion it's supposed to
address.

Comment: "[PASTE COMMENT]"
Criterion: "[PASTE CRITERION TEXT]"

Flag any part of the comment that's too vague for a student to act on
("needs more detail," "could be stronger") and suggest a more specific
replacement tied to the actual criterion language. Do not change the
level or mark implied by the comment.

5. Tone check, harsh to constructive

Rewrite this feedback so the tone is constructive rather than harsh, without
softening the actual substance or changing the level it implies.

Comment: "[PASTE COMMENT]"

Keep every specific point the original comment makes. Change only word
choice and framing, not the assessment itself.

6. Turning a terse mark into a full comment

I marked this "[SHORT NOTE, e.g. "weak thesis, 6/10 for this section"]".
Turn that into a full comment a student could actually learn from.

What "weak" means here specifically: "[YOUR NOTE ON WHAT WAS WEAK]"

2-3 sentences. State the issue plainly, then one specific thing to try
next time. Do not restate or imply a different score than what I gave you.

7. Evidence-and-citation feedback template

Write feedback for the evidence/citation criterion, marked "[LEVEL]",
where the specific issue is: "[e.g. "quotes support the point but aren't
introduced," "sources aren't cited in the required style"]"

2-3 sentences: name the issue, say why it matters for this kind of writing,
give one concrete fix. Do not comment on any other criterion.

How do you keep feedback consistent across a whole stack of papers?

By checking your own comments against each other, since consistency across thirty students is the part that actually breaks down under time pressure, not the wording of any single comment.

8. Batch consistency check

Here are feedback comments I've written so far for the same criterion,
across different students, all already marked at the levels shown.

Flag any pair where the wording implies meaningfully different standards
for students at the same level, or the same standard for students at
different levels. Do not suggest changing anyone's actual level — flag
only the wording inconsistency.

9. Bias-in-language check

Read these feedback comments, written by me for different students on the
same assignment, and flag any pattern where tone or word choice differs
in a way unrelated to the actual work quality.

"[PASTE ANONYMIZED COMMENTS, ONE PER STUDENT]"

Point out only patterns across multiple comments, not single word choices
in isolation. Do not comment on the grades themselves.

10. Comment-length and effort parity check

Check whether these feedback comments are roughly proportionate in depth
to the level of detail the rubric criterion calls for, across students.

Flag any comment that's noticeably thinner than the others for the same
rubric row, so I can go back and add specifics I may have skipped under
time pressure.

How do you build a reusable comment bank instead of retyping the same feedback?

By organizing drafts around the rubric criterion they address, so the same well-written comment for "thesis clarity" is one paste away the next time a different student hits the same issue.

11. Comment bank by criterion

Build a small comment bank for the criterion "[CRITERION]", covering these
common levels and issues: "[LIST: LEVEL + TYPICAL ISSUE, REPEATED]"

3-4 sentence comments, one per row, written so I can lightly personalize
each one rather than rewrite it from scratch. Do not state or imply a
numeric score in any comment.

12. Adapting a bank comment to a specific student

Adapt this bank comment to this specific student's actual work, without
changing what it says about the rubric level.

Bank comment: "[PASTE GENERIC COMMENT]"
What's specific to this student: "[NOTES]"

Keep the structure and the level implied. Swap in the specific detail so
it doesn't read as generic. Under 100 words.

13. Building a next-steps library

From this list of common next-step suggestions I give students at
different rubric levels, build a short reusable library organized by
criterion and level: "[PASTE ROUGH LIST OF NEXT-STEP NOTES]"

One or two sentence entries. Group by criterion first, then level. Do not
add a suggestion I haven't given you, even a common-sounding one.

How do you translate feedback for students and families?

By adjusting the language, not the substance, for who's actually reading it next.

14. Student-reading-level version

Rewrite this feedback comment so a [GRADE LEVEL] student can understand it
without help, without changing what it says about the rubric level or the
issue.

Comment: "[PASTE COMMENT]"

Simpler sentence structure and vocabulary. Keep the specific issue and the
specific next step. Do not soften or remove the substance.

15. Parent or guardian summary

Turn this feedback, already written and already reflecting the grade I
assigned, into a short summary a parent or guardian could read alongside
the report card.

Feedback: "[PASTE FEEDBACK]"
Grade/level context: "[e.g. "meets expectations," "70%"]"

2-3 sentences, plain language, no jargon from the rubric itself unless
explained in one clause. State the grade I gave; do not reinterpret it.

16. End-of-term narrative comment

Write an end-of-term narrative comment from this list of specific,
already-recorded facts about the student's term: "[LIST: GRADES,
OBSERVED GROWTH, PARTICIPATION NOTES, INCIDENTS -- ONLY WHAT ACTUALLY
HAPPENED]"

150-200 words, warm but factual. Use only what I listed. Do not infer a
fact about the term I have not included, even a positive-sounding one.

17. Plain-language rubric explainer for families

Turn this rubric criterion into a plain-language explanation a family
unfamiliar with the terminology could understand: "[PASTE CRITERION
TEXT]"

2-3 sentences. Keep the actual standard intact; simplify only the wording.
Do not add an example that implies a specific student's situation.

What about self-assessment and peer feedback?

Structuring the questions, never scoring the answers. Self- and peer-assessment stay valuable specifically because the judgement stays with the person doing the reflecting, not with a model reading over their shoulder.

18. Student self-assessment prompts

Write 5 self-assessment questions for students to answer about their own
work against this rubric: "[PASTE RUBRIC]"

Questions should ask students to identify their own evidence for each
criterion, not just rate themselves numerically. Do not include a
question that asks the student to guess their grade.

19. Peer-feedback guide for students

Write a short guide for students giving peer feedback on this assignment
type: "[ASSIGNMENT TYPE]", anchored to this rubric: "[PASTE RUBRIC]"

Structure: what to look for per criterion, and two sentence starters for
giving feedback kindly and specifically. Do not include a way for peers to
assign each other a grade or numeric score.

20. Turning marked feedback into a student study guide

Turn this feedback, already reflecting the grade I assigned, into a short
study guide the student can use before their next assignment.

List the 2-3 specific things to focus on next time, in the student's own
assignment's terms, not generic study advice. Do not restate or change the
grade itself; reference it only as context.
