What's the difference between ChatGPT answering from memory and ChatGPT searching the web?
Two different things produce a ChatGPT reply, and from the outside they can be indistinguishable. One is the model predicting the next words based on what it learned during training, sometimes called an ungrounded answer. The other is retrieval: the model runs one or more web searches first, reads what comes back, and writes an answer that is grounded in those specific pages.
The practical difference is verifiability. An ungrounded answer is a synthesis of pretraining data with no live source behind it. Ask it something outside its training window, or something obscure enough that the training data barely touched it, and it will still produce a fluent, confident sentence, because generating plausible text is the entire job. That holds even if you've asked it to reason step by step first: chain-of-thought prompting improves how the model reasons over what it already knows, but it doesn't hand the model a fact it never had. A grounded answer traces back to pages the model actually opened during that conversation. It can be wrong too, but it is wrong about something real, not invented from nothing.
The trap is that both answers are delivered in the exact same voice. Nothing in the tone, structure, or confidence of a ChatGPT reply signals which mode produced it, and why ChatGPT makes things up in the first place has nothing to do with whether search is involved — an ungrounded answer can be just as fluent as a grounded one. You have to look for the mechanism, not the phrasing.
Two questions that look almost identical make the point. What's a reasonable password length for a login form is timeless; ChatGPT can answer it from training data and there is nothing a search would improve. What does this company's current pricing page say about a password minimum is not timeless at all; the page may have changed since training data was collected, and only a search reads what it says today. Same shape of question, same confident tone available for both, completely different reliability depending on which one actually happened.
How can you tell whether ChatGPT actually searched?
OpenAI's own help center is specific about this: "Responses that use web search may include citations. Select a citation to open its source... Select Sources, when available, to view cited sources and other relevant links" (help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search, accessed September 3, 2026). That citation is the signal. No citation link under a factual reply almost always means no search happened.
The reverse check works too. If you explicitly select Search from the tools menu and the reply still has no source links, something has gone wrong with the search itself, not with your prompt, and it is worth trying again or checking OpenAI's own status page.

When does ChatGPT decide to search on its own?
Automatically, and the trigger is the content of your question, not a setting you configure ahead of time. OpenAI states plainly that "ChatGPT may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information" (same help article). In practice that means anything with a strong recency signal: prices, scores, news, weather, a person's current job, a product's current spec. Anything that reads as timeless — a definition, a math problem, a rewrite of your own text — is far less likely to trigger it, because there is nothing for a search to improve.
This matters for how you write the prompt. If you want a search and the topic is genuinely time-sensitive, say so in a way that signals recency, something like what is the current price of, as of this week, or the latest version of. If the topic is ambiguous, ChatGPT may guess wrong in either direction, sometimes searching when you wanted a quick reasoning answer, sometimes answering from memory when you actually needed today's number.
How do you make ChatGPT search when it wouldn't on its own?
Ask directly, using the explicit control OpenAI documents rather than hoping the automatic trigger fires. Open a conversation, select View all tools, then select Search, or type "/" in the message composer and choose Search from the menu that appears (same help article). You can also regenerate an existing reply and choose "Search the web" from the refresh control, when that option is offered.

There is no published guarantee this suppresses every automatic trigger, since OpenAI does not document one, but as a direct instruction it is the closest thing available, and it is more reliable than staying silent and hoping the model guesses your preference correctly. If a reply still searches when you didn't want it to, or ignores your instruction entirely, that's usually faster to fix by restarting the conversation with the constraint stated up front than by arguing with the model turn after turn.
Does everyone get ChatGPT search, or can it be turned off?
Most people, yes, without needing a paid plan. OpenAI's help center states plainly: "Web search is available on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. People who are not signed in can also use web search" (help.openai.com, accessed September 3, 2026). So plan tier isn't the reason a search silently fails to trigger, and even a signed-out visitor gets it.
Where it does get turned off is at the workspace level, not the individual's. OpenAI's separate documentation for Enterprise and Edu accounts is direct about this: admins control a Web search setting, and when it's off, "ChatGPT and GPTs created in the workspace cannot use web search, even if a user asks ChatGPT to search or manually selects search" (help.openai.com/en/articles/10093903-chatgpt-search-for-enterprise-and-edu, accessed September 3, 2026). Role-based access can narrow it further inside one workspace: "If any applicable role sets Web search to Off, the member cannot use ChatGPT search even when another role grants it."
This changes how you troubleshoot a prompt that won't cooperate. On a personal account, if Search won't trigger no matter how explicitly you ask, the likely culprit is your wording or a temporary outage, since nothing at the plan level blocks it. On a work or school account, the faster move is asking an admin whether Web search is enabled for your role, before you spend more time rewriting a prompt that a workspace switch will override regardless of how it's phrased.
Why do grounded answers still get facts wrong?
Because a citation proves retrieval happened, not that the summary next to it is accurate. This is the part most people skip, and it is the actual point of this post: opening the source is not optional, it is the whole safeguard.
OpenAI's own documentation says this outright: "Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Open a cited source to check that it supports the answer, review when it was published or updated, and use an authoritative source when accuracy matters" (help.openai.com, accessed September 3, 2026). That is OpenAI telling you, in its own product documentation, not to trust the citation on sight.
The Tow Center's study ran 1,600 queries total across eight tools — twenty publishers, ten articles each, eight chatbots — asking each one to identify the correct article, publisher, and URL from a pasted excerpt. Across every tool tested: "Collectively, they provided incorrect answers to more than 60 percent of queries." A high error rate on source attribution was not unique to any one product. Its own count for ChatGPT specifically: "ChatGPT, for instance, incorrectly identified 134 articles, but signaled a lack of confidence just fifteen times out of its two hundred responses, and never declined to provide an answer" (cjr.org, published March 6, 2025). That is 134 of 200, or 67%, and the finding that stands out even more than the error rate is the confidence: wrong two-thirds of the time and hedging in less than one-tenth of those wrong answers.
This is a specific, narrow measurement worth being precise about: it tested whether the tool could correctly name the article, publisher, and URL behind a pasted excerpt, not whether an ordinary factual answer was right or wrong. It's the sharpest kind of citation test there is, because the source material was handed to the model directly, and it still got the attribution wrong two-thirds of the time. Treat it as a floor on how often a citation can mislead, not a ceiling.
What happens when nobody checks the citation?
The clearest cautionary example predates ChatGPT Search entirely, which is exactly why it is instructive. In Mata v. Avianca (S.D.N.Y., docket 1:22-cv-01461, before Judge P. Kevin Castel), an attorney used ordinary ChatGPT, with no web search feature available at the time, to research case law for a personal injury brief. The court's June 22, 2023 sanctions order describes what happened in blunt terms: the attorneys "submitted non-existent judicial opinions with fake quotes and citations created by the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT, then continued to stand by the fake opinions after judicial orders called their existence into question" (opinion text, accessed via caselaw.findlaw.com, September 3, 2026). One of the attorneys later testified about why he didn't catch it: "I just was not thinking that the case could be fabricated, so I was not looking at it from that point of view." The court fined the attorneys and their firm $5,000.
Why this belongs in a post about search, not just hallucination: it is the cleanest illustration of what an ungrounded citation actually is. When ChatGPT has not searched anything, a case name, a quote, and a citation number are all generated the same way a sentence is, as plausible next tokens, with nothing behind them. They can be formatted with total confidence and be entirely fictional. A grounded, search-based citation at least points at a real page that existed before you asked the question. That is a meaningfully lower floor of risk, but per the Tow Center figure above, it is still a floor, not a guarantee. Whether the citation is real or invented, the same discipline applies: open it before you rely on it.
How do you constrain a search to recent, dated sources?
State the window explicitly rather than trusting a recency word to do the work. "Latest" and "current" are doing a lot of implicit lifting, and the model has no fixed definition of how recent is recent enough for your purposes.

For each source, state its publish date before summarizing it.
If nothing that recent exists, say so instead of using an older source.

Naming the source type helps too, when it matters. A clause like prioritize the vendor's own documentation or prefer a primary source over a news summary both push the search step toward pages you would trust more, in the same way a person doing manual research would narrow where they look before they start reading.
