TL;DR: Veo 3.1 and Kling 3.0 are not substitutes. Veo locks you to 16:9 or 9:16, tops out at 8 seconds, and always generates audio; Kling adds a native 1:1 ratio, runs 3 to 15 seconds even at 4K, and ships silent unless you turn audio on. Kling is cheaper per second at every matching resolution. Pick by aspect ratio, duration, and audio need, not by a declared winner.
Veo 3.1 vs Kling 3.0: which one should you actually pay for?
If you searched Veo 3.1 vs Kling 3.0, you are probably choosing which one to build a paid workflow on, not which one "wins" in the abstract. That framing matters, because the two models are not interchangeable. Google's Veo 3.1 and Kuaishou's Kling 3.0 expose different aspect ratios, different duration ceilings, different default audio behavior, and different per-second prices at the API level. Every one of those differences is something you can check on the vendor's own page, on the day you read this.
What this post does not do is rank picture quality. We have not run a side-by-side generation test on either model, and any post that tells you one model looks better without showing its method is asserting a preference, not a measurement. Output quality is genuinely subjective and depends on your prompt, your subject, and your taste. We are comparing what each vendor documents and what each vendor charges instead, since that part does not depend on anyone's opinion. Every field name, enum, and price below was checked directly against ai.google.dev and kling.ai on September 3, 2026. Re-check anything you plan to budget against, because both vendors change these pages without notice.
What aspect ratios does each model actually support?
This is the shortest section and the one most worth reading first, because it rules out entire use cases before you touch price.
Veo 3.1's aspectRatio parameter, documented on Google's Gemini API reference, accepts exactly two values: "16:9" (default) and "9:16". That is the full list, and it is identical across every current Veo variant: Veo 3.1, Veo 3.1 Fast, Veo 3.1 Lite, Veo 3, and Veo 3 Fast all show the same two options. There is no square, no 4:5, no 21:9. If your deliverable is an Instagram square post or a Pinterest pin, Veo cannot produce that ratio natively; you would generate 16:9 or 9:16 and crop, which is not the same as a model-native square frame.
Kling 3.0 documents a third option. Its API reference for the 3.0 text-to-video endpoint lists settings.aspect_ratio with the enum 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, default 16:9. That native square ratio is the one concrete capability Veo does not have at any price. If your pipeline needs 1:1 output without a crop step, that alone can decide the comparison before you look at anything else.
Can you get 4K at full duration on either model?
Here the two models genuinely diverge, and Google's own documentation contradicts itself along the way, which is worth knowing before you trust either page at a glance.
Veo 3.1's durationSeconds parameter is an enum of "4", "6", "8" for Veo 3.1 and Veo 3.1 Fast, with a field note stating duration Must be "8" when using extension, reference images or with 1080p and 4k resolutions. In plain terms: pick 1080p or 4K and Google removes the 4-second and 6-second options for you. In practice this costs you almost nothing, because 8 seconds is already Veo's longest available clip regardless of resolution. You lose the ability to render a cheap, short 4K test, not the ability to shoot a long 4K scene.
Kling 3.0's settings.duration field takes any integer from 3 through 15, and Kling's own request example in that same API reference pairs "resolution": "4k" with "duration": 15 in one request body. Nothing in the spec ties resolution to a shorter duration window. That is the meaningful gap between the two vendors: Veo's duration ceiling (8s) is short enough that the resolution coupling barely bites, while Kling's much longer ceiling (15s) is fully available at its top resolution, which is the harder thing to document and the more useful thing to know before you build a pipeline around either one. Neither vendor publishes a Veo-3.1-or-Kling-3.0 frame rate you should treat as settled fact for every mode. Veo's Model features table gives 24fps across all four current variants. Kling's 3.0 text-to-video specification has no frame rate field anywhere; a 24fps figure appears only on the separate Omni reference-video upload requirement, which describes an input constraint, not an output spec. Is audio on by default, or do you have to ask for it?
This is the cleanest, least ambiguous difference between the two models, and it changes your prompt-writing habits more than any other setting here.
Veo's Model features table marks audio "✔️ Always on" for Veo 3.1, Veo 3.1 Fast, Veo 3.1 Lite, and Veo 3 & Veo 3 Fast. Only the older Veo 2 is silent. Every current Veo generation you pay for ships with sound, whether you wrote audio into the prompt or not, and Google's own pricing page bills every tier as a "video with audio price (default)". If you want a silent Veo clip for a music-video edit, you are muting it after the fact, not asking Veo to skip audio.
Kling 3.0 is the mirror image. Its settings.audio field defaults to "off", with an enum of native or off. A request that leaves this field out of the body renders silent, full stop. What does each model actually cost, per second?
Both vendors bill their developer APIs per second of output, which is the one unit they define identically, making it the fairest number to put side by side. These are the September 3, 2026 rates from each vendor's own pricing page; both move without notice, so re-check before you budget a batch.

Two things worth pulling out of that table. First, Veo 3.1 Lite genuinely has no 4K option: Google's own pricing page marks it "(4k output not supported)" rather than just omitting a number, so this is not a documentation gap, it is a stated ceiling. Second, Kling's audio toggle is not free: turning native audio on adds exactly 50% to the per-second price at 720p and 1080p (both prices divide out to 1.5x), which is worth knowing before you flip it on for every generation out of habit. Kling's 4K rate does not change with the audio toggle, since it is listed at a flat $0.42 either way.
If you also need a video input (an Element or reference clip) rather than pure text-to-video, Kling's Omni endpoint prices that combination separately: $0.126/s at 720p and $0.168/s at 1080p with no native audio, same 4K rate. Veo's parameter table has no separate price tier for image-to-video or reference-image input. The per-second rate above applies regardless of input type.
What about multi-shot storyboards and clip extension?
Kling documents a real prompt-level grammar here that Veo does not have an equivalent for. Kling's settings.multi_shot boolean defaults to true, and when it is on, the model reads a shot format directly out of your prompt text: shot n, m, words; repeated with semicolons, where n is the shot's sequence number (1 to 6 shots), m is that shot's length in seconds, and the words are that shot's own prompt, capped at 512 characters. Kling's field note is explicit that each shot must run at least one second and that the sum of all shot durations must equal the total video duration: a shot list that doesn't add up to your requested length is a malformed request, not a rounding hint. Set settings.multi_shot to false and that same shot-formatted prompt is read as plain text instead.

Veo has no equivalent shot-list syntax in its own parameter table, but it does have a capability Kling's 3.x family lacks entirely: a video parameter for extending a previous generation. Google's reference describes it as accepting "a Video object from a previous generation," and it is scoped narrowly: of the four current Veo columns, only Veo 3.1 Standard and Veo 3.1 Fast show a real value there; Veo 3.1 Lite, Veo 3, and Veo 3 Fast all read "n/a" for that field. Kling's own capability map lists Video Extension as "Not Supported" across every model in the 3.0, 3.0 Turbo, and 3.0 Omni family, so on Kling a 15-second clip is a hard ceiling for a single generation, and stitching is on you. Neither of these is inherently better. Multi-shot narrative structure and clip extension solve different problems: one builds a longer story inside one generation, the other stretches an existing clip forward. Which you need depends on whether you're planning ahead or reacting to a clip you already have.

Route by the job, not by a scoreboard. Three questions settle most of it:
Do you need a square (1:1) frame, or anything other than 16:9/9:16? Only Kling 3.0 documents that option. Veo cannot produce it natively at any price.
Do you need more than 8 seconds in a single generation, especially at high resolution? Kling's 3-to-15-second range, fully available at 4K, wins this outright. Veo's ceiling is 8 seconds no matter what you pay.
Do you want audio baked in by default, or silence by default? Veo assumes you want sound and charges accordingly; Kling assumes you don't and makes you ask. Neither is wrong, but building a pipeline that assumes the other vendor's default is how teams end up with silent Veo footage they never muted on purpose, or Kling clips nobody remembered to voice.
Budget is the tiebreaker when the above three don't decide it for you. At matching resolutions, Kling with audio off is consistently cheaper than Veo Standard, and cheaper than Veo Fast at 720p and 1080p, though Veo Fast and Lite undercut Kling once you turn Kling's audio on. None of that touches how either clip actually looks, because we didn't measure that here, and neither should you take anyone else's unscored claim about it at face value. One more date worth keeping in view: if Sora is still part of your mental shortlist, it shouldn't be much longer. OpenAI's own deprecations page schedules sora-2 and every other Sora model alias for removal from the API on September 24, 2026, with no replacement named. Whatever you were running on Sora needs to land on Veo, Kling, or something else before then, not after.
