Lighting Direction in AI Video Prompts

Video lighting prompts for light that changes mid-shot: motivated practicals, time-of-day shifts, firelight, headlights, screen glow. 25+ copy-paste prompts, verified against vendor docs.

TL;DR: Video lighting prompts have one job a still-image lighting prompt never has: describing light that changes during the shot. A practical switches on, a subject crosses from shadow into a window's light, a storm flashes white for a frame. Name the source, the direction, and — always — the cause of the change, or the shift reads as a rendering glitch instead of a choice.

A still image has one lighting state. A video clip can have five: a subject stepping out of a doorway's shadow into afternoon sun, a lamp clicking on mid-sentence, a storm flashing white for two frames, a phone's glow shifting color as whatever's playing on it changes. That's the entire distinct job of this post: light that moves, not light that sits.

This post assumes you already have a lit shot and asks the harder question: what do you write when the light itself is supposed to do something during the four, eight, or fifteen seconds you're generating?

One distinction is worth making before anything else. If what you actually want is a loop, a clip that plays forward and rejoins its own beginning cleanly, lighting needs to hold perfectly still, not change, and that's a different job with different rules; see our loop and cinemagraph guide. Everything below is for the opposite case: a shot that's allowed, and often supposed, to move on.

What Makes Lighting Different When the Subject Is Moving?

A photograph asks a model to commit to one lighting decision and hold it. A video asks the same model to hold a lighting decision, then abandon it on cue, in a way that still looks like one continuous world rather than two different renders stitched together. That second part is the harder ask, and it's why "cinematic lighting, golden hour" works fine on a still and reads as vague and static on ten seconds of footage: it never tells the model whether, or how, the light is allowed to change.

Google's own Veo 3.1 documentation opens its very first quickstart example with a light that's already doing something: a prompt describing two people examining a wall drawing by "torchlight flickering" (ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/veo, accessed 3 September 2026). That's not a stylistic flourish on Google's part. It's the default expectation: a video prompt names an active light source, not a fixed mood word.

How Do You Name a Light So It Can Change on Purpose?

Every rule from static lighting still applies. It just gets a time axis bolted on.

Name the source and its direction, even mid-change. "The room gets brighter" tells a model nothing about where the light comes from. "The overhead fluorescent flickers back on, spilling flat white light down from the ceiling" tells it exactly what to render at every frame of the change. Restate the source and direction as part of describing the change itself, not as an afterthought.

Quality does more work than brightness. Hard light (a bare bulb, direct sun, an undiffused practical) casts a sharp-edged shadow that moves distinctly the instant its source activates or shifts. Soft light (an overcast window, a shaded lamp) produces a gentler, slower-reading change. If a light event has to register clearly in four seconds, hard light shows it faster than soft light does.

Color temperature contrast is what sells a shift as filmic rather than generic. A lamp switching on inside a room already lit by blue window light does two things at once: it adds a new hard source, and it creates a temperature clash, warm tungsten against cool daylight, that no adjective like "cozy" or "cinematic" substitutes for. Name both colors whenever two sources are going to share the frame.

And the rule that matters most: a light that changes needs a cause the camera can see, or it reads as a bug. This isn't guidance from any single vendor; it's the same logic that makes an unexplained jump cut look like an error instead of a decision. A switch, a struck match, a door opening wider, a cloud crossing the sun, a screen's content changing: put the cause in the same sentence as the effect.

Ten Ways Light Changes During a Shot

Organize a lighting-in-motion prompt around what actually causes the change, not around a mood word. These ten cover almost every case that comes up in practice.

Motivated Practicals

A practical is a light source the camera can plausibly see the reason for: a lamp, a screen, a sign, a strip of under-cabinet LED. In a still, you can get away with an unexplained glow. In video, an unmotivated light immediately reads as a rendering artifact, because the eye is already watching for continuity across frames. Name the fixture, not just its effect.

An empty laundromat at 2am. The only light comes from a single buzzing
overhead fluorescent tube and the soft blue glow of a running washing
machine's porthole window. A tired man sits on a plastic chair, lit
mostly by the machine's blue light with the harsher fluorescent falling
across the floor beside him. Ambient hum of machines.

A Subject Moving Between Light and Shadow

Classic blocking: a character walks past a row of windows, posts, or skylights, and the exposure on their face rises and falls rhythmically. This is motivated by architecture, so name the pattern (evenly spaced, irregular) and the pace of the walk, or the model tends to average the light into one flat exposure instead of alternating it.

A Lamp Being Switched On

The ignition moment itself: the state before and the state after both need describing, and the trigger belongs in the same sentence as the change, or the light shift reads as an exposure jump cut rather than an event that happened. A dim bedroom lit only by faint streetlight through the curtains. A hand
reaches into frame and clicks a bedside lamp switch. The lamp comes on
instantly, spilling warm amber light across the pillow and nightstand
while the cool streetlight remains visible behind it. "There, that's
better," a woman murmurs.

A cluttered garage, nearly dark except for a sliver of daylight under the
door. A man reaches up and pulls a hanging cord. A single bare bulb
snaps on overhead, throwing a hard circular pool of white light straight
down onto a workbench, the corners of the garage staying dark.

Time-of-Day Shift Within a Shot

This is a different job from a camera-based transition between two shots (that's covered in our transition prompts guide). Here, one locked or slow-moving shot carries the passage of time on its own, inside a single generation's duration cap. Say explicitly what changes: the color temperature, the shadow angle, and any practicals that activate as the light fades.

# Runway Gen-4.5 — rooftop dusk shift
A static wide shot of a city rooftop terrace. Over the course of the
shot, warm late-afternoon sunlight fades to a cool blue dusk, and string
lights strung across the terrace flicker on one by one as the ambient
light drops. No camera movement, no cuts.
# LTX-2.5 — shopfront day to night
A single continuous take of a small shopfront across a quiet street.
Daylight gradually dims to blue evening light, and the shop's own neon
sign, previously unlit and invisible against the daytime glare, becomes
visible and switches on partway through, adding pink light to the wet
pavement below it.

Firelight and Flicker

Firelight belongs to a live scene here, not a locked, everything-else-frozen loop (see our loop and cinemagraph guide if a repeating candle or hearth is actually what you need). Ask for irregular flicker rather than a steady pulse, and let the flame answer to a story beat instead of just sitting there.

Screen Glow on a Face

A monitor or phone glow is a common practical, but most prompts describe it as one flat color wash. Naming what's plausibly on screen, and letting the glow's color or brightness shift with it, is what makes it read as a reactive light source instead of a decorative one.

# Sora 2 — phone glow in the dark
A teenager lies in bed in an otherwise dark room, face lit only by her
phone. The glow on her face shifts from cool blue-white during a
scrolling feed to a warmer, redder wash for a few seconds when a video
autoplays, then back to blue-white. No other light in the room.
# Veo 3.1 — control room monitor bank
A night security desk lit only by a wall of monitors. Most screens hold
a steady dim blue glow, but one screen in the center flashes bright white
for an instant as a motion alert triggers, briefly overexposing the
guard's face before settling back to the dim blue of the rest of the wall.
# Kling 3.0 — gaming setup RGB glow
A young man plays a video game at a desk in a dark room, lit only by his
monitor and a strip of RGB keyboard lighting. As the on-screen action
intensifies, the monitor's glow shifts from calm blue tones to flashes
of red and orange across his face, the keyboard's glow pulsing faster to
match. He leans forward as the light gets more frantic.

Headlights and Passing Light

Different job from a car's own headlights lighting its driver: here, the source stays off-camera, and its light does work on a surface, a wall, a ceiling, blinds, as a vehicle passes outside a static interior.

# LTX-2.5 — ceiling sweep
A static shot of a bedroom ceiling and upper wall, mostly dark except for
faint ambient light. A car passes on the street outside; its headlights
sweep a long bright bar of light across the ceiling from left to right,
briefly illuminating the room before fading back to near-darkness as the
car moves on. Distant engine sound rising then falling.

A small night office, lit only by a desk lamp. Through closed venetian
blinds, a passing car's headlights rake a set of bright horizontal bars
across the far wall, moving steadily across it before disappearing,
while the desk lamp's warm light stays constant throughout.

Window Light With Movement Outside

The opposite requirement from a cinemagraph, where everything outside the frame has to freeze. Here the outside motion is the point: a cloud, a passing train, moving foliage, changes the light landing on an interior subject, and the prompt should say what moves outside and how the light on the subject responds.

# Seedance 2.5 — cloud crossing the sun

across the desk and his hands. A cloud passes over the sun outside; the
light softens and dims for several seconds, losing its sharp shadow
edges, then sharpens back to hard sunlight as the cloud clears.

A bedroom with sheer white curtains over an open window. A gust of wind
billows the curtains inward, letting a burst of hard afternoon sunlight
sweep across the bed and floor before the curtains fall back and the
light returns to a softer, filtered glow. The gust repeats every few
seconds. Fabric sound, distant birdsong.

Silhouette to Reveal

Not the same use as holding a subject in silhouette for continuity across a cut (that's in our character consistency guide). This is the reveal itself: a figure starts as a pure dark shape and a specific event exposes them to the light.

# Veo 3.1 — workshop door reveal
A workshop interior, mostly dark. A large sliding door begins to open,
and bright daylight spills in from behind a figure standing in the
doorway, at first showing only a silhouette. As the door slides fully
open and the figure steps forward into the room, hard daylight reveals
their face and the tools on the workbench behind them.
# Kling 3.0 — stage spotlight
A performer stands motionless on a dark stage, visible only as a
silhouette against the faint red glow of exit signs. A single spotlight
snaps on from directly above, and hard white light reveals the
performer's face and costume in sharp detail, the rest of the stage
staying black.

Storm and Lightning

Lightning is a near-instant, full-frame exposure spike, not a static bolt shape sitting in the background. Describe it as a flash with a duration and an intensity, something that briefly changes how bright everything is, or most models render a bolt on the horizon that never actually lights anything.

# Sora 2 — highway lightning flash
A stranded car on a dark highway shoulder during a storm. A flash of
lightning briefly overexposes the whole frame to near-white for a single
beat, revealing the car and a figure standing beside it in sharp detail,
before the scene drops back to near-total darkness lit only by hazard

An attic during a thunderstorm, mostly dark. A figure searches the space
with a handheld flashlight, its narrow cone of light the only steady
source. A distant flash of lightning through a small window briefly
floods the whole attic with cold blue-white light for less than a second,
overpowering the flashlight beam, before darkness returns.
# Kling 3.0 — lighthouse storm flash

Is Keeping Lighting Consistent Across a Clip a Prompt Problem, a Setting, or a Wall?

This is the honest part. Getting a light to change on cue inside one shot is mostly a writing problem. Keeping it consistent once you start cutting, inside one generation or across several, is not always a writing problem, and it helps to know which is which before you spend an afternoon rewriting a prompt that was never going to fix it.

OpenAI's own Sora 2 cookbook is direct about how much lighting carries the scene: "Light determines mood as much as action or setting," it says, adding, "Diffuse light across the frame feels calm and neutral, while a single strong source creates sharp contrast and tension" (cookbook.openai.com/examples/sora/sora2_prompting_guide, accessed 3 September 2026). The same page ties an actual setting to lighting fidelity, stating plainly: "Higher resolutions generate detail, texture, and lighting transitions more accurately, while lower resolutions compress visual information, often introducing softness or artifacts." That's a documented, testable lever, not a writing trick: if a subtle lighting shift is coming out muddy or the flicker is disappearing, the resolution setting is worth checking before the prompt.

Cross-shot consistency is where vendors split. LTX-2.5's own prompting guide is explicit: at every internal cut inside a multi-shot generation, its checklist tells you to "Re-establish the new shot — shot scale, camera angle, who or what is in frame, and lighting if it changed" (docs.ltx.io, accessed 3 September 2026). That's a documented instruction to actively restate lighting, not just an assumption that it holds. Kling's own VIDEO 3.0 user guide documents its Multi-Shot and Custom Multi-Shot modes in detail (kling.ai/quickstart/klingai-video-3-model-user-guide, accessed 3 September 2026) but says nothing about lighting continuity across those shots either way, which means it's untested territory: expect drift and check the output, not the documentation.

Across two entirely separate generations, the honest answer is worse: no vendor checked here documents a way to guarantee that clip two's lighting matches clip one's. That's the same underlying limit our character consistency guide found for keeping a face the same across cuts. Lighting has no more of a persistence mechanism than identity does.

Kling's absence from every row here isn't a knock on the model; its user guide is simply written around framing, coverage, and shot planning, and doesn't address lighting as its own topic the way the other three do. That doesn't mean Kling can't render a motivated light change (the Custom Multi-Shot examples above suggest it can), it means you're testing undocumented behavior when you ask for one, rather than following a stated feature.

One category of vendor is missing from this table entirely, and the reason is worth knowing before you try: avatar-video tools like HeyGen. Their endpoints take a script and a static reference image, not a scene description, so there's no field to put any of this in, motivated or not.
