AI Video Prompt Not Working? 25 Problems, 25 Fixes

AI video troubleshooting sorted honestly: which of the 25 common problems a rewrite fixes, which need a parameter change, and which are model limits no wording can reach.

TL;DR: An AI video prompt not working is three different problems wearing one costume. Some are wording problems a rewrite fixes. Some are parameter problems where a request-body field is wrong. And several of the 25 below are capability limits: the model genuinely cannot do the thing, on any vendor, no matter what you type.

Why is my AI video prompt not working?

Because you're probably treating every wrong clip as a writing failure, and a third never were.

Prompt problems. The model rendered what you asked, and the ask was vague or missing the vendor's own syntax. Rewording fixes these.

Parameter problems. Your wording is fine; a request-body field defaults to something unexpected. Rewriting changes nothing.

Capability limits. The vendor's docs say the thing doesn't work, full stop. Vidu's own image-to-video reference notes movement_amplitude, despite accepting a value, is "ineffective for q2, q3 models" (Vidu reference, read September 2, 2026). Not a prompting mistake.

Which of the 25 problems do you have?

Find your symptom, note the number, jump to it.

Problems 1 to 9: the ones a rewrite really does fix

Each pair shows the broken prompt and the corrected one, so the change is visible.

1. "It only did about half of what I described"

What is happening. A long shot description doesn't give every clause equal weight. Detail added late competes with detail added early, and something loses.

Fix. Cut to the three things you'd be annoyed to lose, in screen order. See the anatomy of a video prompt for sequencing a longer shot.

Broken:
A busy night market with steam rising from food stalls and neon signs
reflecting in puddles and a vendor flipping noodles and a couple sharing
an umbrella and string lights overhead and a stray cat and distant thunder,
cinematic, ultra detailed, 8k

Fixed:
A night market street, wet cobblestones reflecting neon signage. One
vendor flips noodles over a wok, steam rising into frame. Handheld
camera, slow push in toward the wok.

2. "A style word for one detail took over the whole shot"

What is happening. A style adjective in plain-text prose is global by default. "Vintage" for the poster made the whole shot vintage; nothing scopes a style word to one object.

Fix. Describe that one object as a physical thing inside an otherwise plain scene, not as a style modifier.

Broken:
A modern apartment with a vintage film poster on the wall, vintage style

Fixed:
A modern apartment, clean daylight, neutral tones. On the wall hangs a
worn 1970s film poster, faded reds and browns, visible creases. The rest
of the room is shot as a straight, contemporary photograph.

3. "It looks like a slideshow, no real camera movement"

What is happening. Nothing in the prompt named a camera move, so the model defaulted to a barely perceptible drift. "Cinematic" is not an instruction.

Fix. Name the actual movement, one instruction per shot. See 30 camera terms that change the render.

Broken:
A cinematic shot of a runner on a track at sunset, dynamic camera

Fixed:
A runner on an outdoor track at sunset. Slow tracking shot moving right
alongside the runner at hip height, camera holding pace with her stride.

4. "The background contradicts my subject"

What is happening. You detailed the subject and left the setting implied, so the model filled it in from the subject's usual associations.

Fix. Give the background its own sentence, its own nouns.

Broken:
A firefighter in full gear, portrait, on a beach

Fixed:
A firefighter in full turnout gear, waist-up, facing camera, static
frame. Behind her: an empty grey pebble beach under an overcast sky,
flat horizon, no buildings, no fire, no vehicles.

5. "My negative words showed up in the shot anyway"

What is happening. With no negative-prompt field, "no crowd" reads as a description containing the word crowd. Google's own guidance is to describe the scene positively instead, since there's no field to subtract a concept from.

Fix. State what should be there instead. See our negative prompt support matrix.

Broken:
An empty street at dawn, no cars, no pedestrians, no clutter

Fixed:
A bare cobblestone street at dawn, closed shutters, a single lamppost.
Nothing parked, no one in frame, no signage on the walls.

6. "The cut between my two clips is a jump cut"

What is happening. Nothing told the model how the shots connect. ByteDance's own Seedance docs treat transition prompting as real and supported: "clearly specify both the trigger point and the transition method."

Fix. Name timing and technique together, not "smooth transition." See transitions inside vs. between clips.

Broken:
[Clip 1] then smooth transition to [Clip 2]

Fixed:
At the 5-second mark, the camera quickly transitions leftward using a
left wipe combined with a natural dissolve into the next shot.

7. "Dialogue landed on the wrong character in a multi-shot scene"

What is happening. One paragraph describing several shots gives the model no way to bind a line to a person. Kling's VIDEO 3.0 Omni reference documents a shot grammar, shot n, m, words; (sequence, duration, text), plus @name references to bind a line to a subject.

Fix. Use the documented grammar instead of one paragraph, referencing each subject by @name.

Broken:
Two people talk in a kitchen, the woman says something, then the man
replies, then she leaves

Fixed:
shot 1, 3, @Anna leans on the counter, says "We need to talk."; shot 2,
2, @Marcus looks up from his coffee, says "I know."; shot 3, 3, @Anna
turns and walks toward the door.

8. "My on-screen text or sound cue did nothing"

What is happening. Mixed dialogue, music, sound effects and subtitles need a marker. Seedance's own guides publish bracket markers, and the convention shifted between versions: () music is full-width on 2.0, ASCII on 2.5; {} dialogue and 【】 subtitles stay consistent.

Fix. Use the bracket convention for the version you're calling. See our Seedance prompting guide.

Broken:
Text on screen says WELCOME, and the music should be upbeat

Fixed:
(Upbeat synth music, steady tempo) 【WELCOME】

9. "The dialogue came out mumbled, not clear speech"

What is happening. Google's own Veo guide draws a hard line: "Dialogue: Use quotes for specific speech." Sound effects and ambience get plain descriptive prose, outside quotation marks. An unquoted line of dialogue reads as ambience.

Fix. Put the actual words in quotation marks; describe SFX and ambience as plain prose.

Broken:
The detective mutters something about the door being unlocked, tense mood

Fixed:
The detective examines the door. "This was already unlocked," he
mutters. Faint hum of a refrigerator in the background.

Problems 10 to 17: your wording was never the issue

The control lives in the request body, not the sentence.

10. "My Kling video came out completely silent"

What is happening. Kling's own VIDEO 3.0 Omni reference documents settings.audio with values native, original, off — default off. Kling is the one vendor here that ships silent unless asked.

Fix. Set settings.audio to native. No amount of describing sound in the prompt turns this on.

Broken:
A quiet street scene, birds chirping softly (audio field left at default)

Fixed:
"settings": { "audio": "native" }
A quiet street scene, birds chirping softly.

11. "The camera drifts when I wanted it locked down"

What is happening. Seedance's camera_fixed boolean defaults to false: the camera moves unless told otherwise. The field settles it, not prose.

Fix. Set camera_fixed: true. Not supported in reference-image scenarios, per the same docs.

Broken:
A locked-off static shot of a candle burning on a table

Fixed:
"camera_fixed": true
A candle burning on a table, flame flickering gently.

12. "My video has audio I didn't ask for"

What is happening. xAI's own Video Generation guide states it plainly: "Generated videos include an audio track by default." The fix is a field, not a sentence.

Fix. Pass generate_audio: false.

Broken:
A paper boat drifting down a rain-soaked street, completely silent

Fixed:
{ "model": "grok-imagine-video-1.5", "prompt": "A paper boat drifting
down a rain-soaked street", "generate_audio": false }

13. "The clip cut off before my action finished"

What is happening. Duration is a hard, per-vendor range: Kling 3–15s, Seedance 2.5 4–30 (or -1), Runway's Gen-4.5 branch 2–10, Grok Imagine 1–15 (default 8). Prose about "a long, lingering shot" changes none of it.

Fix. Set the field to what your vendor supports. Full table: duration parameters by model.

Broken:
A slow, lingering 20-second shot of waves rolling in

Fixed:
[Kling] "duration": 15 (its documented maximum)
[Seedance 2.5] "duration": 20
A shot of waves rolling in, slow and unhurried.

14. "I asked Veo for 4 seconds and got 8 anyway"

What is happening. Google's Veo docs list durationSeconds as "4", "6", or "8" — but the value must be "8" when the request uses extension, reference images, or 1080p/4k. Shorter values apply only to the plainest request.

Fix. Check for those three features before assuming a shorter duration is available.

Broken:
"durationSeconds": "4" combined with a 1080p reference-image request

Fixed:
Drop to plain text-to-video for a genuine 4-second clip, or accept "8"
once reference images or 1080p are in play.

15. "I typed an aspect ratio into the sentence and got something else"

What is happening. Ratio is almost always a request field. Runway's Gen-4.5 branch exposes a six-value ratio enum; OpenAI's Sora API takes a four-value size enum. Neither reads "16:9" in prose.

Fix. Set the field from the vendor's own enum.

Broken:
A mountain landscape at sunrise, 16:9 widescreen please

Fixed:
[Runway] "ratio": "1280:720"
[OpenAI] "size": "1280x720"
A mountain landscape at sunrise.

16. "The same seed gave me a different-looking clip"

What is happening. Where a seed field exists, it narrows randomness, not eliminates it. Runway's own docs say the same seed integer on an identical request "will produce similar results", not identical ones. Several vendors publish no seed field at all.

Fix. Pin the seed, expect near-identical output, and iterate from a saved clip otherwise. Same gap in text models: seeds and determinism.

Broken:
Same prompt, submitted five times, hoping for one identical result

Fixed:
"seed": 11
(expect a similar composition and motion, not a pixel-identical clip)

17. "My video got flagged and I don't know why"

What is happening. Runway's Gen-4.5 schema includes a contentModeration object with publicFigureThreshold, settable to low to relax how strictly the system blocks generations resembling a recognisable public figure.

Fix. Check whether your subject could read as a real person before assuming the sentence is the problem.

Broken:
A famous-looking pop star performing on stage (repeatedly refused)

Fixed:
"contentModeration": { "publicFigureThreshold": "low" }
A performer on stage under concert lighting.

What to do when it is a capability limit

Don't keep rewriting. Try a vendor that documents the feature, accept the substitute behaviour, or finish the rest in an editor.

18. "I set the motion amount on Vidu and nothing changed"

Capability limit. Vidu documents movement_amplitude twice on one page, disagreeing with itself: the request table calls it "The movement amplitude of objects in the frame", the response table calls it "The camera movement amplitude parameter". The endpoint also warns "Modifying this parameter is ineffective for q2, q3 models."

What helps. Nothing, on this endpoint, on either model. See our Vidu prompting guide.

Broken:
"movement_amplitude": "large" on an image-to-video request (accepted,
changes nothing on either q2 or q3)

Fixed:
Accept the model's default motion, and reserve Vidu for shots where
its other strengths matter more than dialing motion up or down.

19. "There's no way to ask Runway for more or less motion"

Capability limit. Runway's image-to-video spec defines 13 model branches, and none exposes a motion-amount field. Two branches even have a promptText field ending in the words "describing motion or changes in the output video" — motion lives entirely in prose there.

What helps. Nothing structural. Our Runway Gen-4.5 prompt generator is built around that.

Broken:
"motion_intensity": "high" (not a field on any of Runway's 13 branches)

Fixed:
Describe the motion in the prompt, as specific as you can, and accept
there's no numeric lever behind it.

20. "My Runway video will never have any sound"

Capability limit. Runway's Gen-4.5 schema has nine fields (prompt, image, seed, ratio, duration, moderation, format, ProRes, model) and none is audio. The veo3.1 and veo3.1_fast branches on the same endpoint both expose audio.

What helps. Route to a different branch if audio matters, or add sound in post.

Broken:
A thunderstorm rolling in, with rumbling thunder audible (on gen4.5,
no audio field exists)

Fixed:
Switch the model field to veo3.1 for native audio, or add the thunder
in an audio editor afterward.

21. "I drew an impossible motion path and got something else"

Capability limit. Kling's own Motion Brush docs state it directly: "Designating a motion trajectory for objects that cannot move in the physical world will lead to results based on the model's interpretation."

What helps. Keep trajectories plausible, or describe an impossible effect in words. See Kling Motion Brush patterns.

Broken:
[Motion Brush trajectory: object passes directly through a solid wall]

Fixed:
Describe it in words instead: "The object appears to phase through the
wall, a deliberate glitch effect," letting the model interpret the
impossible motion as a stylized moment.

22. "My audio is mono even though I fed it stereo"

Capability limit. ByteDance's own Seedance API reference is unambiguous: "All generated videos with audio are mono, regardless of the number of channels of the input audio."

What helps. Nothing in the request. Re-process the mono track in an audio editor if stereo width matters for the final piece.

Broken:
Requesting a stereo mix by feeding stereo reference audio (output is
mono regardless)

Fixed:
Generate the clip, accept mono output, add stereo width in post if
the final piece needs it.

23. "I set a seed on Seedance 2.5, hoping for a repeatable result"

Capability limit. ByteDance's create-task reference documents seed, default -1, honest that a repeat gives "similar results" but "complete consistency is not guaranteed." Its supported-models list, though, is Dreamina Seedance 1.5 pro, 1.0 pro, 1.0 pro fast only — not 2.5, not the 2.0 series.

What helps. Nothing documented, on the model most people use. Treat any near-repeat as a side effect, not a guarantee.

Broken:
"seed": 11 on a Seedance 2.5 request, expecting a repeatable base
composition on the next regeneration

Fixed:
Save the clip you liked and feed it back in as a reference, instead
of relying on a seed the docs don't cover for this model.

24. "My clip won't loop no matter how I word it"

Capability limit. Across Kling, LTX, Vidu, Pika, Seedance and Wan's own documentation, none publish a video-loop parameter. Luma is the exception, with a genuine loop field.

What helps. Use Luma if a true loop is the requirement; elsewhere, blend the last frame into the first in an editor. See AI video loop prompts and cinemagraphs.

Broken:
A looping animation of rain falling (on Kling, Seedance, Vidu, Pika,
Wan or LTX — none document a loop field)

Fixed:
[Luma] "loop": true
Elsewhere: crossfade the last half-second into the first in an editor.

25. "Telling it 'no X' did nothing"

Capability limit. xAI publishes no negative-prompt field anywhere in Grok Imagine's video API and no prompting guide at all.

What helps. Describe positively, as in problem 5, but with no field to fall back on.

Broken:
A city street, no rain, no umbrellas, no wet pavement

Fixed:
A city street under clear evening light, dry pavement, pedestrians in
light jackets.

A five-minute diagnostic before you rewrite anything

  1. Reproduce it once. Same failure twice means a field or a real limit; different each time means randomness.
  2. Check the request body first: audio, duration, ratio, motion, camera lock.
  3. Read the vendor's docs for "does not take effect" or a model-family carve-out.
  4. Only then rewrite, one change at a time.
