TL;DR: Animal and creature video prompts for AI video work best sorted by what the animal is doing, not which species it is. Ten behavior categories below, each with copy-paste prompts that name the species and the action. Gait and anatomy failures are real capability limits on most current models, not wording problems, and this page says plainly which is which.

What actually makes an animal or creature video prompt work?

Two habits do most of the work, and neither is exotic.

Name the species, not the category. "An animal" gives a video model almost nothing to render from: no size, no coat, no default gait. "A red fox" hands it all three at once. The same swap matters more for behavior: "a happy dog" is a mood word the model has to translate into a pose, while "a dog's tail thumping twice against the porch boards" is a specific, renderable action.

BytePlus's own Seedance 2.5 prompt rules state the formula plainly: subject, action or event, scene and environment, visual style, camera movement, and sound, unnecessary parts omitted. Nothing in that list is an emotion word.

The other habit is matching clip length to how much motion you actually asked for. A four-second clip cannot hold a stalk, a leap, and a recovery. Which ten animal behaviors need their own template?

What the animal is doing decides whether a shot works, more than the species or the model. A resting animal survives almost any model unchanged; a four-legged run exposes gait errors a still frame never would. The ten categories below run roughly easiest first. Each has two or three ready prompts with the species already filled in; swap it for another and keep the rest of the sentence.

A single animal at rest, with small motion

The easiest shot on this list, because there is little to get wrong. Give the small motion a concrete source, breath, an ear, a whisker, rather than leaving the animal simply "resting," which some models render as a held photograph with nothing moving at all.

1. Sleeping fox, small breathing motion

Walking or running

This is the category where locomotion actually gets tested. Name the gait itself, trot, canter, lope, waddle, gallop, rather than the generic "walking." A named gait gives the model a real pattern to render instead of an average of every four-legged motion it has seen. This is also the category most likely to expose the sliding-foot, wrong-count problem covered below, and no amount of rewording reaches that on every model.

A predator's stalk

A stalk is a held posture, then a release. Describe the freeze and what breaks it, not just the word "stalking," which some models flatten into a plain walk with none of the tension.

Flight and landing

Wings need a beat pattern, not just "flying," and a landing needs the instant of contact named. Say what surface the animal lands on; that single noun does most of the grounding. Pair it with a real camera move rather than a mood word; our camera movement vocabulary reference covers thirty terms and what each one actually does to a shot.

9. Eagle's dive and strike

Water: swimming, splashing, emerging

Water breaks first at the point of contact. Name what the water itself does, sheets off, parts, drains, instead of leaving it implied by the animal's motion alone.

A herd or flock

Give one animal in the group an actual verb to anchor the shot. A crowd where nothing specific happens to any one member reads as background noise, not a scene.

Close detail: eye, fur, feather, scale

The eye is where uncanniness shows first, ahead of the body. Give it a reflection and a single movement, a blink or a dilation, rather than describing it with an adjective.

An animal reacting to something offscreen

Give the trigger a direction, even though it stays off frame. The animal's ears and head carry the whole performance; the thing itself never needs to appear.

An invented creature

A creature that doesn't exist still needs a real gait to move against, because the model has nothing else to draw on. Borrow one from an actual animal, a reptilian walk, a bird's wingbeat, an insect's flutter, and name it explicitly. Google's own video generation prompt guide does the same thing: alongside a robed, fantastical figure, its worked example describes a "small, mechanical owl with holographic wings and camera-lens eyes that blink with a soft, red light" (Gemini Enterprise video generation prompt guide, read September 2, 2026), a real animal's shape and behavior borrowed on purpose. Kling's own Video 3.0 launch material does it too, closing a fifteen-second worked example with "a small to medium-sized, adorable baby dinosaur" that "steps out from behind a plaster pillar, letting out a sweet chirp" (Kling VIDEO 3.0 user guide, read September 2, 2026).

22. A small dragon's reptilian walk

An animal with a human in frame

Give the human and the animal different verbs happening in the same beat, not a static portrait of person-plus-animal. If the animal is a real, identifiable pet, treat the footage the way you would a photo of a person's face; more on that below.

Why do four-legged gaits still look wrong, no matter how you rewrite the prompt?

Sort the failure before you rewrite anything, the same way our post on video with no motion sorts static clips into prompt, parameter, and capability-limit buckets. Animal locomotion splits the same three ways.

Prompt problems. You wrote "walking" instead of naming the gait, or asked for a run, a turn, and a landing inside a clip too short for any of it to finish; our duration reference by model has the actual per-vendor ranges. These are fixable by rewording, and most gait complaints actually live here.

Parameter problems. Rare for animals specifically, but real. Seedance's camera_fixed field applies only to the Dreamina Seedance 1.5 pro, 1.0 pro, and 1.0 pro fast models, and setting it to true gets you: "Fix the camera. ModelArk will append the fixed camera instruction to the user's prompt, but the actual result is not guaranteed." (BytePlus ModelArk video generation API, read September 2, 2026.) Copy that field onto a 2.x model and it does nothing.

Capability limits. A model that renders a four-legged trot with a sliding back foot, or an extra wingtip mid-flap, will generally keep doing that on the same subject however you reword it. No vendor documents animal gait or anatomical accuracy as a setting; it is not in a request body to fix.

Kling's own Motion Brush guide shows the shape of a limit about as honestly as a vendor gets, even without naming gait directly. It states the feature can "handle the movement and changes in direction of people/animals" (Kling Motion Brush guide, read September 2, 2026). Its showcase names an intended result, "Have the cat jump over the plate." The success prompt: "A cat jumps over the bowl in front of it." The failure: "A cat walks forward." Same cat, same feature: success or failure comes down to whether the sentence names the motion, a prompt problem. Separately, the guide documents something closer to a capability limit: "Designating a motion trajectory for objects that cannot move in the physical world will lead to results based on the model's interpretation." Its own example is a trajectory drawn on a building: "Since it's difficult for a building to move horizontally in the real world, the motion trajectory for the element will be interpreted as a camera movement path." Kling publishes nothing equivalent for a wrong leg count on a running dog, but the shape holds: ask for motion a model can't produce, and it substitutes something else instead of an error.

Nothing in that table is a workaround. It is the honest state of things: locomotion quality is not a switch on any current vendor's API, so when a rewrite does not fix a gait, that is information, not a sign you have not found the right words yet. The same rule our no-motion diagnosis reaches for static clips applies here: after two or three genuinely different rewrites on the same model, change the model or change the shot instead. A tight close-up on a head, an eye, or a paw, drawn from the templates above, sidesteps a full-body gait that a wide shot exposes.

Can the same animal prompt move between Veo, Kling, and Seedance?

The description of the animal and its behavior, yes. The mechanics around it, no, and this is the single most common mistake in a prompt library copied across vendors.

Seedance's own prompt rules use special characters most other vendors don't recognize: () for music, <> for sound effects, {} for dialogue, and 【】 for subtitles (Dreamina Seedance 2.5 prompt guide, BytePlus ModelArk, read September 2, 2026). Paste that bracket syntax into a Kling or Runway prompt and it becomes literal text in your description, not an instruction. Kling's Motion Brush, in turn, is an image-to-video feature, painting a region and a trajectory onto an uploaded image, so there's no typed-prompt equivalent for a text-only model. Runway makes the broader point plainly, and it is worth taking at face value for at least its own models. Asked whether JSON prompts produce more accurate results, Runway's help center answers: "JSON prompts give the placebo effect of being more accurate." It adds that "JSON formatting is ignored by generative models" on its side, and that what actually matters is the detail provided within the prompt (Runway, "Introduction to Prompting", updated June 27, 2026, read September 2, 2026). Runway's own recommended simple prompts are exactly the kind on this page: "a cat sitting on a windowsill" is one of its two worked examples of a prompt needing no special structure at all. Other vendors do publish their own structured formats worth using on their own models. The honest rule is per-vendor, not universal: check the vendor you're actually running the prompt through, and don't assume a syntax that works on one model does anything on another.

What should you never put in an animal or creature video prompt?

Two rules, both short.

Don't write prompts depicting cruelty, injury, or visible distress in an animal, real or invented. A predator's stalk or a struggle in deep water, shown as ordinary behavior with no suffering, is a normal nature-documentary shot, and it's what every template above describes. An animal hurt or trapped for the shot is a different thing, and isn't in any template here.

The second rule is about likeness, not welfare. A real, identifiable pet, someone's actual dog or cat a viewer would recognize, carries the same consent and likeness questions as a photo of a person's face; they're just asked less often because the subject has fur instead of skin. A generic "golden retriever" prompt with no real animal behind it raises none of this.
